A three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, brokered with US backing, has opened the door to something markets haven’t priced in for years: the possibility that this war might actually wind down. President Trump said he believes the truce could last longer than its initial window, and crypto markets appear to agree with him, at least for now.

Bitcoin pushed past $80,000 following the announcement, a move traders attributed directly to the perceived cooling of one of the world’s most destabilizing geopolitical conflicts.

The truce covers May 9 through May 11, a narrow window that both sides have already tested with mutual accusations of violations. Alongside the pause in fighting, the deal includes a planned 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange, which would represent one of the largest swaps since the conflict escalated.

Discussions between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have apparently included the possibility of extending the ceasefire beyond its initial three days, with a potential longer-term arrangement floated for as late as June 30. Prediction markets have pegged the odds of that extension at roughly 9.5%.

The Russia-Ukraine war has been a background variable in crypto markets since February 2022. During the initial stages of the conflict, Ukraine raised over $225 million in crypto donations for defense, while Russia’s strategies to circumvent sanctions included increased use of Bitcoin and stablecoins.

On the demand side, reduced conflict could lessen the premium investors place on non-sovereign stores of value. But the immediate market reaction, Bitcoin reclaiming $80,000, suggests traders are reading the ceasefire as net positive rather than a reason to rotate out.

Ethereum has moved higher with the broader crypto market this week, but its rebound is now facing a technical test that may decide whether the move has real strength or only a reflection of Bitcoin’s momentum.

A recent technical outlook points to a shortfall on the ETH daily candlestick chart, as the price continues to stall below the upper end of its rising channel despite repeated attempts to extend the rally.

Ethereum’s Rally Is Showing A Shortfall
Technical analysis of the Ethereum daily candlestick timeframe chart shows that Ethereum has been trading inside a rising channel since February 2026. This is a structure that, in theory, should allow bulls to progressively push the price toward its upper boundary.

The structure has produced a sequence of higher lows, which is usually a good sign. However, the problem is that ETH has not matched that strength on the upper side of the pattern, at least in May.

According to a crypto analyst that goes by the name Ardi on the social media platform X, the channel’s upper boundary currently is around $2,520, but ETH’s recent advances have repeatedly stalled around $2,420. That leaves the price about 6% below the channel high, creating a shortfall.

The daily structure is also not fully bullish. While ETH has reclaimed its short- and medium-term moving averages, the 200-day EMA is still above the current price, meaning the recovery is still incomplete.

The concern becomes more serious because Bitcoin has already achieved what Ethereum has not. The Bitcoin price has reached the upper side of its own channel structure to create a higher high around $81,000, meaning Bitcoin has been leading the market rally more cleanly.

The mechanics of the pilot reveal how each institution contributed a distinct piece of the settlement architecture. Ripple redeemed a portion of its holdings in OUSG — Ondo Finance’s Short-Term US Government Treasuries fund, a tokenized product available to accredited investors and qualified purchasers — directly on the XRP Ledger. Ondo processed the redemption and triggered a fiat payout instruction through Mastercard’s Multi-Token Network (MTN), a platform designed to enable interoperability between on-chain assets and traditional money movement systems.

From there, Mastercard’s MTN routed the instruction to Kinexys by J.P. Morgan — JPMorgan’s blockchain infrastructure platform, which has now processed more than $3 trillion in cumulative transactions, per figures cited in the announcement.

Fairshake itself is bankrolled by some of the biggest names in crypto, including Coinbase and Ripple Labs. The committee spent over $130 million trying to shape the outcome of the 2024 elections. In 2026, it’s already at it again — about $10 million has been directed toward races in Illinois and Texas so far.

Baird has been in Congress since January 2019 and has built a record that crypto advocates consider dependable. He backed the GENIUS Act, which deals with stablecoin regulation, and the CLARITY Act, a bill focused on crypto market structure. For Fairshake, he was worth protecting.
