Agentic commerce will run on crypto rails, PayPal and Google reps tell Consensus MiamiMIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Senior figures from Google Cloud and PayPal told CoinDesk's Consensus Miami conference on Thursday that the next wave of internet commerce will run on crypto rails because AI agents structurally cannot use traditional financial accounts.

Richard Widmann, global head of Web3 strategy at Google Cloud, said the existing internet user experience does not extend to autonomous agents.

"An agent cannot get a bank account. It's not hard, it just is impossible," he said, citing technological and regulatory barriers. Crypto, by contrast, is "a fantastic machine readable interface for payments," Widmann said.

To address the gap, Google has launched the Agentic Payments Protocol (AP2), an open protocol that has been donated to the FIDO Foundation and has more than 120 partners including PayPal, Widmann said. He compared the move to the x402 internet-native payment standard given to the Linux Foundation.

"Open dialogues and open standards are really the foundation you need to build on," Widmann said.

May Zabaneh, senior vice president and general manager of crypto at PayPal, said the company is treating agents as the next channel after PayPal's evolution from offline to online to mobile commerce. PYUSD, the company's stablecoin, is "a very natural programmable layer for payments," she said, particularly as commerce trends toward globalization, AI-native experiences and tokenized assets.

Zabaneh cited a recent PayPal survey which found that 95% of merchants now see AI agent traffic on their sites, but only 20% have machine-readable catalogs. "Merchants need to be ready for this next era," she said. The shift, she added, mirrors the move from offline to online stores; merchants need to expose their products in agent-readable formats.

Jerome Powell Is Stepping Down: What Did He Accomplish as Fed Chair, and Where Did He Go Wrong?Jerome Powell, whose eight-year term as head of the Fed is coming to an end, is preparing to officially step down on May 15.

Powell, an “unconventional” central bank governor without an economics background, witnessed many critical periods, from the pandemic crisis to the highest inflation in 40 years, from aggressive interest rate hikes to debates on central bank independence.

During Powell’s first years in office, the Fed pursued a policy of gradual interest rate increases and balance sheet reduction. However, in 2020, as the pandemic shook the global economy, the Fed under Powell’s leadership supported markets by implementing a zero interest rate policy, an unlimited bond purchase program, and emergency lending mechanisms. These steps helped prevent a liquidity crisis in the financial system and averted a severe recession in the US economy, laying the foundation for the subsequent V-shaped recovery.

However, one of the most criticized aspects of Powell’s tenure was the initial assessment of inflation as “temporary.” As the post-pandemic economy reopened and fiscal stimulus measures were implemented, consumer prices in the US rose rapidly, with annual inflation reaching 9.1% in 2022, its highest level in 40 years. Following this, the Fed initiated its most aggressive monetary tightening program since the 1980s, raising interest rates 11 times and bringing the policy rate to the 5.25-5.5% range.

Although markets worried about the possibility of a severe recession during these aggressive interest rate hikes, the US economy managed to bring inflation down without experiencing a major contraction. The Bitcoin short-term holder SOPR had climbed to 1.016. It has also been above 1 since mid-April, meaning short-term holders have been selling at a profit since then. This metric reinforces the profit-taking idea and the lack of market conviction, likely born from experience with previous bear cycles.

The bounce above $76k improved holder profitability and encouraged sustained selling. This selling has not yet turned into an aggressive distribution from larger long-term holders, leaving the market at a critical inflection point.

The elevated STH SOPR metric can see an extended local top and a bearish correction. Alternatively, it could also be signaling a transition toward a bullish market phase.

Federal authorities just pulled the curtain back on one of the most elaborate insider trading operations in recent memory. On May 7, the DOJ, FBI, and SEC unsealed criminal charges against 30 individuals accused of running a scheme that allegedly generated tens of millions of dollars in illegal profits over the course of roughly a decade.

Nineteen defendants were arrested in the US. Two others, located in Russia and Israel, are considered fugitives.

At the center of the operation sit two attorneys: Nicolo Nourafchan, based in California, and Robert Yadgarov, based in New York. The pair allegedly exploited their access to prestigious law firm networks to get their hands on confidential merger and acquisition documents before deals went public.

Those friends, according to prosecutors, were a sprawling network of traders spread across multiple states and countries. The group allegedly front-ran approximately 30 major M&A deals, buying up shares before announcements sent prices higher, then cashing out.

Defendants allegedly used encrypted messaging apps, coded language, shell companies, and foreign accounts to obscure their activities. Payments between

conspirators were reportedly disguised as loans, adding another layer of obfuscation that took investigators years to untangle.

Nourafchan also faces obstruction charges, suggesting prosecutors believe he actively tried to interfere with the investigation once it was underway.

The SEC separately charged 21 of the 30 defendants in civil proceedings, which typically seek disgorgement of profits, fines, and industry bans. On the criminal side, securities fraud carries penalties of up to 25 years in prison per count.
