North Korea’s crypto heist playbook is expanding and DeFi keeps getting hit


Less than three weeks after North Korea-linked hackers used social engineering to hit crypto trading firm Drift, hackers tied to the nation appear to have pulled off another major exploit with Kelp.

The attack on Kelp, a restaking protocol tied into LayerZero’s cross-chain infrastructure, suggests an evolution in how North Korea-linked hackers operate, not just looking for bugs or stolen credentials, but exploiting the basic assumptions built into decentralized systems.

Taken together, the two incidents point to something more organized than a string of one-off hacks, as North Korea continues to escalate its efforts to hijack funds from the crypto sector.

“This is not a series of incidents; it is a cadence,” said Alexander Urbelis, chief information security officer and general counsel at ENS Labs. “You cannot patch your way out of a procurement schedule.”

More than $500 million was siphoned across the Drift and Kelp exploits in just over two weeks.

How Kelp was breached

At its core, the Kelp exploit did not involve breaking encryption or cracking keys. The system actually worked the way it was designed to. Rather, attackers manipulated the data feeding into the system and forced it to rely on those compromised inputs, causing it to approve transactions that never actually occurred.

“The security failure is simple: a signed lie is still a lie,” Urbelis said. “Signatures guarantee authorship; they do not guarantee truth.”

In simpler terms, the system checked who sent the message, not whether the message itself was correct. For security experts, that makes this less about a clever new hack and more about exploiting how the system was set up.

“This attack wasn’t about breaking cryptography,” said David Schwed, COO of blockchain security firm SVRN. “It was about exploiti

Platform-level developments have also contributed to the sector’s momentum. Both Kalshi and Polymarket have expanded their efforts within the crypto segment, improving infrastructure and accessibility.

Polymarket recently announced plans to launch its own stablecoin, Polymarket USD, backed by USDC. The move aims to streamline transactions while improving on-chain attribution, making it easier to track order flow and trading activity.

Kalshi, on the other hand, has advanced on the regulatory front. A ruling by a United States Court of Appeals sided with the firm in its dispute with New Jersey, preventing the state from applying gambling laws to its platform.

Arbitrum (ARB) Announces Urgent Measures Following Major Cryptocurrency Hack Over the Weekend! Here Are the Details

The DeFi sector is witnessing one of its worst periods since the 2022 crash. The KelpDAO attack, one of the most talked-about topics in recent days, resulted in a loss of $290 million. However, the losses didn’t stop there. This attack caused a total outflow of $7 billion across the top 20 chains in just 24 hours.

As the cryptocurrency sector reacts to the KelpDAO attack, Arbitrum has announced that it has urgently frozen approximately 30,766 $ETH associated with the KelpDAO vulnerability.

Arbitrum (ARB), the second-layer Ethereum network, announced via its official X account that it had identified an address linked to the KelpDAO attack that occurred on Saturday evening. Following this, Arbitrum stated that it had frozen 30,766 Ethereum ($ETH), worth $71.05 million, held by the hacker on Arbitrum One.

“The Arbitrum Security Council froze approximately 30,766 $ETH held in addresses associated with the KelpDAO vulnerability.”

According to the statement, the funds were successfully transferred to another frozen wallet via an intermediary and are no longer accessible from the hacker’s address.

“The frozen funds can only be activated by the next decision of the Arbitrum management, and subsequent transactions will be carried out in cooperation with the relevant institutions.”

The hacker’s address starts with 0x5d3919. The individual still holds 75,700 $ETH on the Ethereum chain.

As you may recall, in the KelpDAO attack, a large amount of rsETH tokens were stolen from a LayerZero-powered bridge, and most of them were used as collateral on Aave to purchase wETH.

Crypto tracker app CoinStats has released benchmark results showing its Al Agent outperforms deep research tools from Google, OpenAl, and Anthropic on crypto-specific queries. The results come alongside the public beta launch of CoinStats Al Agent, a research copilot designed specifically for cryptocurrency analysis.

In a benchmark using an Al judge to evaluate the quality of crypto research outputs, CoinStats Al Agent scored 79 out of 100. Gemini Deep Research came in second at 67, followed by ChatGPT Deep Research at 61, and Claude Deep Research at 58.

The speed gap was equally notable. CoinStats Al Agent returned results in an average of 4 minutes. Gemini took 23 minutes, Claude 22 minutes, and ChatGPT 55 minutes.
