IB1T’s rise could reshape Europe’s battle for institutional Bitcoin capital — and the numbers arriving this week make that case impossible to dismiss.

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin ETP (IB1T) crossed $1.1 billion in assets under management as of May 1, 2026, holding approximately 14,200 $BTC across major European exchanges including Euronext Amsterdam, Euronext Paris, and Xetra Frankfurt.

In just over a year since its March 2025 launch, IB1T has become one of the fastest-growing Bitcoin investment products in Europe. The institutional appetite it represents is no longer a U.S.-only story.

Europe Finally Has Its Own Regulated Bitcoin On-Ramp

IB1T is physically backed — Bitcoin held in cold storage through Coinbase Custody International — giving European institutions direct, auditable exposure without the operational complexity of self-custody.

It operates under the EU’s MiCA regulation — a framework that standardises custody, transparency, and investor protection rules across all member states.

That matters because for years, European pension funds, asset managers, and wealth managers had no equivalent to what U.S. institutions accessed through IBIT. IB1T fills that gap — compliantly, on familiar exchanges, at a familiar cost.

The product carries a total expense ratio of 0.15% — supported by a fee waiver in place until December 31, 2026 — making it directly competitive with U.S. spot products on cost.

European allocators have cited currency risk, inflation, and geopolitical developments as the primary drivers behind their Bitcoin exposure decisions.

IB1T’s MiCA-compliant structure removes the compliance barriers that previously kept many of them on the sideline.

If inflows sustain their current pace, IB1T could clear $2 billion in AUM before year-end 2026 — becoming the

But the more interesting story isn’t just price action — it’s leverage.
Dogecoin’s open interest surged sharply during the rally, reaching over $1.4 billion, a two-month high, before stabilizing above $1.2 billion. This signals that traders are actively positioning in the market again, especially in the derivatives space.
Historically, rising open interest tends to amplify price trends — but it also increases fragility.
If DOGE continues upward, leveraged positioning could fuel further gains.
However, if price reverses, the same leverage could accelerate liquidations and downside pressure.
At the same time, trading volume has started to cool off. Some analysts interpret this not as weakness, but as consolidation — a phase where the market resets before deciding its next direction.

However, the bulls were facing a test as $AKT showed signs of pausing between $0.75 and $0.80. If bulls keep buying the altcoin, the $1 target may be viable. Otherwise, $AKT may correct, as assets tend to do after such rallies.

“If we’re decentralized enough, regulators can’t touch us.”
But Europe’s latest stance under MiCA is sending a very different message.
The European Banking Authority (EBA) and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) are making it clear that regulators care less about branding — and more about who actually controls the protocol.
If a team can still:
• Freeze funds
• Upgrade smart contracts
• Control governance
• Operate multisig wallets
• Influence protocol infrastructure
…then regulators may decide the project is NOT “fully decentralized.”
The recent Arbitrum Security Council action highlights this perfectly.
Despite being a permissionless Layer-2 network, a governing body was still able to freeze roughly $71M linked to the Kelp DAO exploit.
That single action exposed a key regulatory reality:
Control matters more than decentralization narratives.
