Market Updates: Strategy Pauses Bitcoin Buys Ahead of Q1 Earnings, Ethereum Foundation Offloads 10,000 ETH in Latest BitMine OTC Trade, NY Court Fines Uphold $5M Over Crypto Fraud
Crypto markets began the week on a cautious note. Strategy paused its Bitcoin purchases ahead of its Q1 earnings release, while the Ethereum Foundation continued trimming its ETH holdings through over-the-counter deals with BitMine.

On the regulatory side, New York authorities fined Uphold $5 million for promoting a disputed investment product. At the same time, new polling data pointed to growing skepticism among Americans toward both cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence.

Strategy, the largest publicly listed corporate holder of Bitcoin, has temporarily paused new purchases.

Executive Chairman Michael Saylor confirmed on X that the company would not be adding to its holdings this week. His updates are often closely watched as signals of Strategy’s broader accumulation strategy.

The pause comes just ahead of the company’s first-quarter earnings report scheduled for Tuesday, suggesting a period of internal financial reassessment.

According to a filing with the US SEC dated 27 April, Strategy last added to its position between 20 and 26 April. During that window, it purchased 3,273 BTC for approximately $255 million.

This brings its total holdings to 818,334 BTC, acquired at an average cost of $77,906 per coin, with an overall cost basis of $75,537. At the time of reporting, Bitcoin was trading around $80,043, slightly above Strategy’s average acquisition price.

Meanwhile, analysts cited by Yahoo Finance expect the company to report a loss of $18.98 per share, wider than the $16.49 loss recorded a year earlier. The projected decline is largely attributed to mark-to-market accounting adjustments on its Bitcoin holdings.

Charles Hoskinson pushed back against criticism that Cardano prioritized governance over scaling, arguing that the network’s current roadmap reflects years of research rather than a delayed pivot. The dispute comes as Input Output’s latest treasury proposals put Leios, Peras, layer-2 infrastructure and developer tooling back at the center of Cardano’s 2026 technical agenda.

In a post on X, the Cardano founder said he was “getting insanely tired” of what he called a “false narrative” that scaling had been abandoned in favor of governance. Hoskinson argued that scaling work had been continuous since before Shelley, spanning layer-2 designs, the eUTXO accounting model, zero-knowledge research, partnerchains and, ultimately, Leios.

“It was an enormously challenging problem that we relentlessly attacked from many different angles including L2 innovations, a brand new accounting model- eutxo- zero knowledge ideas, partnerchains, and capstoning with Leios,” Hoskinson wrote. “Many of these ideas required deep r&d and original publications. This cannot be made faster by throwing more people at it. It’s research.”

Cardano Scaling Debate Heats Up
His comments land at a sensitive moment for Cardano governance. Input Output has submitted nine treasury proposals for community review, describing them as tied to Cardano’s 2030 vision and focused on scalability and decentralization. IO says the 2026 funding request totals $46.8 million, down from $97.5 million last year, and is intended to help deliver key roadmap components while moving more development capacity into a broader contributor ecosystem.

That structure is part of the tension. In a separate exchange, Hoskinson warned against a fragmented voting outcome after community members debated whether the IO proposals should be treated as a coordinated package or as separate funding items. Leading decentralized lending platform Aave has asked a U.S. federal court to block an attempt by victims of North Korean terrorism to seize about $71 million in crypto frozen after last month’s rsETH-related exploit, escalating a dispute that has already split Arbitrum’s governance.

The filing, submitted Monday in the Southern District of New York, seeks to vacate a restraining notice served on Arbitrum DAO by lawyers representing judgment creditors of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Aave argues the assets belong to users of its protocol, not North Korea, and warns that keeping them frozen risks “irreparable harm” to the platform and the broader DeFi ecosystem.

At the center of the fight is 30,765 $ETH that Arbitrum’s Security Council froze after the April exploit, when attackers used improperly valued or unbacked rsETH as collateral on Aave, contributing to a situation that the plaintiffs allege resulted in approximately $230 million in $ETH being withdrawn from the Aave Protocol. Some of those funds were later intercepted and immobilized on Arbitrum, with plans to return them to affected users as part of a coordinated recovery effort.

The dispute centers on whether stolen property briefly held by hackers becomes their legal property.

The plaintiffs, three sets of judgment creditors holding $877 million in damages awards against North Korea, argue it does — and that's because the rsETH attackers are widely believed to be linked to Pyongyang's Lazarus Group, the recovered ether can be claimed against those decades-old judgments.
