US should scrap crypto capital gains tax to fuel competition: Cato



Cato Institute, a US-based think tank, has argued the government should remove capital gains taxes on Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to open the door for more currency competition.

Capital gains tax (CGT) is discouraging the use of alternative currencies like Bitcoin ($BTC) as it incentivizes long-term holding and adds extra burdens to reporting requirements, Nicholas Anthony, a policy scholar and research fellow at the Cato Institute, said in a report on Wednesday.

He argued the simplest option is to end capital gains taxes completely; however, another option could be removing them on crypto and foreign currency use to “take the government’s thumb off the scale and let competition be the true decider of the best money.”

“Bitcoiners know the frustration of tax season all too well. It’s never been easier to use Bitcoin as money,” he said. “Yet, at the same time, the tax code puts an incredible burden on law-abiding citizens. Something as simple as buying a cup of coffee every day with Bitcoin can result in more than 100 pages of tax filings.”

The Cato Institute is a US public policy think tank that tries to influence policy through research and reports. Its members have testified before lawmakers advocating for crypto in the past.

CoW Protocol prices continue to be under pressure over the last 24 hours as the project grappled with fallout from a security incident on April 14. Crypto dropped by nearly 3% to trade at approximately $0.213. Yet that drop was while the global crypto market was on the rise, even as Bitcoin modestly gained.

The divergence illustrates a palpable change in sentiment on the protocol in the wake of the hack. The downturn was set in motion by a front-end attack that attacked the platform’s website. In the last statement release, it was reported that an attacker gained control over the cow.fi domain via DNS hijacking.

This lets the attacker then take users down the path to a malicious interface that had a close match to the original site to redirect them to a similar site. The device had been set up to deceive users into agreeing to approve malicious transactions or revealing sensitive wallet information. Only days after the problem was exposed, the squad put out a public alert.

Users were told to avoid interacting with the platform’s front-end. However, the protocol was also paused as a precautionary measure. The team assured that both the core smart contracts and backend systems were not compromised. Still, the attack carried a significant risk since it attacked the interface that users use to interact with the protocol.

The incident was flagged early by Blockaid, a firm that monitors decentralized applications for suspicious activity. Its detection system identified unusual behavior linked to the cow.fi domain. Shortly after, the protocol confirmed the issue and urged users to stay away until further notice. This quick response helped limit wider damage, even though the event still affected market confidence.

Former Lutnick-run Cantor Fitzgerald donates $10 million to crypto PAC led by Tether exec

Cantor Fitzgerald and Tether, the world’s largest stablecoin issuer, have maintained close ties since 2021, when the firm began serving as a custodian for Tether’s reserves.

The Fellowship PAC also spent over $1 million on advertising for candidates, including Republican Senate candidates Nate Morris in Kentucky, Pete Ricketts in Nebraska, and Republican House candidate Clay Fuller in Georgia, according to filings.

Cantor Fitzgerald, the Wall Street firm formerly owned by current U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, donated $10 million to a super political action committee backing pro-crypto candidates as election season ramps up.

The firm made that donation in February to the Fellowship PAC, according to a Federal Election Commission filing. Bloomberg earlier reported the news. Lutnick's sons now run Cantor Fitzgerald.

Cantor Fitzgerald and Tether, the world's largest stablecoin issuer, have maintained close ties since 2021, when the firm began serving as a custodian for Tether’s reserves. During Lutnick's Senate confirmation hearing last year, lawmakers pressed the secretary on those ties as well as his influence over the crypto industry as a whole.

The Fellowship PAC launched in September 2025 with over $100 million in committed financial backing and a goal of supporting candidates who are "committed to transparent and predictable rules for digital assets." Earlier this month, the PAC named Tether U.S. executive Jesse Spiro as chairman.

Crypto PACs as a whole played a pivotal role during the last election season in 2024, raising millions of dollars to back pro-crypto candidates. Another big player, the Fairshake PAC, has amassed $193 million as of January.

What makes this quite interesting is the fact that ETH’s price is still trading about 55% below its all-time high. The increase in on-chain activity indicates that consumers are still actively participating in the network despite the lack of price change.

Paxos Labs has raised $12 million to solve what the project calls DeFi’s ‘product problem.’ Notably, Paxos Labs is a spin-off of the crypto infrastructure firm Paxos. 

Through its new Amplify, Paxos Labs believes it can make it super easy for users to earn yield, borrow, and lend assets at scale.
