Telegram asserts control over TON blockchain, driving momentumTelegram just stopped pretending it wasn’t running the show. The messaging giant officially took over primary operational control of the $TON blockchain on May 4, replacing the $TON Foundation as the network’s main operator. The market’s response was swift and unambiguous: Toncoin surged 36% within 24 hours, hitting $1.80, a four-month high.

Telegram is now the largest validator on the network, staking approximately 2.2 million $TON. Transaction fees have been slashed to roughly 0.00039 $TON, which Telegram says is about six times lower than previous levels. That rate holds regardless of network congestion.

By becoming the largest validator, Telegram gains direct influence over block production and network governance. This is a messaging platform with over 900 million users becoming the backbone of its own blockchain infrastructure.

Durov’s vision: tech superiority first

Founder Pavel Durov framed the takeover around a concept he called “tech superiority.” In practical terms, that means new developer tools, performance upgrades, and a complete redesign of the Ton.org website, all promised within a two-to-three-week window.

Earlier, the company mandated that all existing non-$TON Mini Apps migrate to the $TON network by February 21, 2025. That deadline functioned as a forcing mechanism, ensuring that the app ecosystem building inside Telegram’s platform would route through $TON rather than competing chains

ECB President Christine Lagarde has pushed back against the idea that Europe should answer dollar crypto stablecoin dominance by promoting euro-denominated stablecoins of its own, arguing instead that the region should build tokenised financial infrastructure anchored in central bank money.

In a speech at the Banco de España LatAm Economic Forum in Roda de Bará, Spain, Lagarde framed stablecoins as one of the fastest-moving policy questions in global finance. The market, she said, has grown from less than $10 billion six years ago to more than $300 billion today, with close to 98% of stablecoins denominated in US dollars and nearly 90% controlled by Tether and Circle.

That concentration has turned crypto stablecoins into more than a crypto-market instrument. In Lagarde’s view, they now sit at the intersection of monetary power, financial stability and tokenised-market infrastructure.

“The growing argument is that to remain relevant, Europe must respond by promoting euro-denominated stablecoins of its own,” Lagarde said. “Otherwise, it faces a future of digital dollaritation and a loss of monetary sovereignty.”

But she argued that this framing misses the central issue. Stablecoins, according to Lagarde, perform two separate functions that are often conflated: a monetary function, by extending the reach of a currency, and a technological function, by acting as the cash leg for settlement on distributed ledger infrastructure.

“The argument I want to develop today is that once we disentangle those two functions, the case for promoting euro-denominated stablecoins is far weaker than it appears,” she said. “And a more fundamental question comes into view: do we actually need stablecoins to obtain the benefits they are said to provide? Or are we mistaking the instrument for the outcome?”

Franklin Templeton’s iBENJI, WisdomTree’s WTGXX, Ondo Finance’s USDY, Centrifuge’s JTRSY, and Superstate’s USTB all contributed to what Token Terminal now confirms is an all-time high for tokenized US Treasury products on Ethereum.

The total market cap sits at roughly $8 billion — up about 100% in just six months.

That kind of growth, spread across multiple established institutions and crypto-native platforms, points to something broader than a single firm testing the waters.

Major asset managers are building these products because they see demand. And that demand is coming from investors who want US government debt exposure with the operational advantages that blockchain infrastructure provides — faster settlement, around-the-clock access, and programmable functionality not available in traditional bond markets.

Ethereum is where nearly all of this activity is concentrated. Data from rwa.xyz shows the network leads the tokenized Treasury space by a wide margin. BNB Chain is the closest competitor, holding $3.4 billion in tokenized Treasury value. Solana, Stellar, and the XRP Ledger each hold under $1 billion.

Meta’s 2026 Stablecoin Push Faces Senator Warren Scrutiny Over Financial Stability Risks

Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren questioned Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg about the company’s stablecoin plans, warning of serious risks to financial stability, competition, privacy, and payments integrity.
This week, US Senator Elizabeth Warren sent a new letter to Meta’s founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, raising concerns about the company’s plans to integrate stablecoins into the platform.

In the letter, the Ranking Member of the Senate Banking Committee highlighted recent reports suggesting that Meta was conducting a “small and focused” trial with a third-party stablecoin and that the company plans to begin its integration in the second half of this year.

As reported by Bitcoinist, Meta began rolling out USDC payouts for select creators in Colombia and the Philippines last month, using Solana and Polygon as supported blockchain rails.
Warren affirmed that it is “essential” for the US Congress to fully understand the implications of Meta’s integration plans as it considers the crypto-market structure bill, the CLAIRTY Act.

“Any attempt to control, influence, or preference a stablecoin on Meta’s platforms–even a stablecoin issued by a third party–could have serious implications for competition, privacy, the integrity of our payments system, and financial stability,” she argued.

US Senate Committee to consider Clarity Act crypto bill next weekThe US Senate Banking Committee is set to markup the Clarity Act on May 14, a bipartisan bill that would establish the first comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets in the country.

The Clarity Act, formally known as the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, would define the jurisdictional boundaries between the SEC and CFTC. In English: it would finally answer the question of whether a given token is a security or a commodity, and which agency gets to police it.

What the bill actually does

At its core, the Clarity Act is an attempt to replace what critics have called “regulation by enforcement” with an actual rulebook. Instead of the SEC suing projects after the fact and letting courts sort out the definitions, the bill would establish those definitions upfront.

Stablecoin regulation is also on the table. Banks have been pushing to ban stablecoin rewards, arguing that yield-bearing stablecoins undermine traditional deposit bases. Crypto firms, predictably, see it differently, framing stablecoin yields as a form of financial innovation that shouldn’t be strangled in the crib.

The bill has attracted bipartisan backing, with Senators Cynthia Lummis and Thom Tillis among its most vocal supporters. Both have been advocating for the legislation since late April 2026, working to build the coalition needed to push it through committee.
