TON price doubles after Telegram made a move critics say cuts against crypto’s core promiseToncoin ($TON) surged from roughly $1.32 on May 1 to an intraday high of $2.90 by May 7, pushing its market cap to approximately $7.8 billion.

The catalyst was Pavel Durov's announcement that Telegram would replace the $TON Foundation as the network's primary driving force and become its largest validator within two to three weeks.

Alongside that, ton.org was updated to state that the domain is “controlled by MTONGA.” Traders took the combination as confirmation that $TON had, in substance, become Telegram's chain. This means being directed by the same company whose 1 billion users would determine its value.

Toncoin climbed from $1.32 on May 1 to an intraday high of $2.90 on May 7 after Durov announced Telegram would take over $TON's governance.

In January 2025, Telegram and $TON formalized exclusivity agreements that went far beyond branding.

$TON became the sole blockchain infrastructure for Telegram Mini Apps, $TON Connect became the required wallet-connection standard for blockchain-enabled mini apps, and Toncoin became the only cryptocurrency accepted for Telegram Stars, Premium, Ads, Gateway, and certain developer and channel-owner payouts.

Those terms gave $TON a structural claim on every financial transaction running through Telegram's platform. What the early-May post added was a governance layer on top of that commercial position.

US Senator and pro-crypto advocate Cynthia Lummis said in an X post, “Let's pass the Clarity Act out of the Banking Committee on Thursday!”

Industry execs had predicted the markup would take place
It comes just days after Kara Calvert, the vice president of US policy at crypto exchange Coinbase, told attendees at the Consensus 2026 conference that she expected “a markup next week.”

Calvert said that the bill needs at least 60 votes to pass in the Senate and that the CLARITY bill needs bipartisan support to become law.

A year later, that announcement has moved beyond headlines, showing up in real classrooms, reaching real students, and delivering an impact that goes far beyond the scale of the donation itself.
The funding has supported 48,108 classroom projects across all 50 U.S. states, each one driven by teachers requesting exactly what their students needed, from basic supplies to science kits and reading materials. In total, more than 675,000 students have been reached, with 86% coming from schools where most learners are from low-income households.
A $15 million share of Ripple’s funding went to DonorsChoose, a platform that lets teachers post real classroom needs and connect directly with donors, cutting through bureaucracy so resources reach students faster.

Next week marks the Senate Banking Committee’s second attempt to hold a markup after it cancelled one in January.

Ethics could be the next hurdle if the Senate Banking Committee ultimately votes yes to advance the bill.

A much-anticipated hearing to vote on sweeping crypto legislation is happening.

On Friday, the Senate Banking Committee said that on May 14, it will be holding its markup to advance a bill that would regulate the industry comprehensively at the federal level for the first time.

Next week marks the Senate Banking Committee's second attempt to hold a markup after it cancelled one in January after major crypto exchange Coinbase pulled its support over concerns, including the treatment of stablecoin rewards. That issue has been seemingly resolved after two key senators released language last week, though bank trade groups have argued that it "falls short."

A few things need to happen before a bill is passed. The Senate Banking Committee needs to advance its version, and then reconcile that with the version the Senate Agriculture Committee advanced earlier in the year.

That bill moved forward without any Democratic support in the agriculture panel, citing President Donald Trump's crypto interests as a major obstacle. Both Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, launched memecoins ahead of the inauguration, and his family has led the DeFi and stablecoin project World Liberty Financial, raking in $1.4 billion, Bloomberg reported in January.
At the time of the Senate Agriculture Committee markup, Democrats proposed amendments that would block the president, vice president, lawmakers, and other federal officials from making certain financial transactions involving digital assets, but these amendments were ultimately not included.....
