Trader Eugene Ng Ah Sio: Bitcoin Near Key Breakout Level as Altcoins Show Bottoming Signals

Crypto trader Eugene Ng Ah Sio said on May 9 that multiple charts across the cryptocurrency market are showing signs of bottoming out, with Bitcoin hovering around $80,000 and altcoins positioned for a potential breakout from their current trading ranges.

"Multiple charts look like they're close to bottoming out," Ng Ah Sio wrote on his personal channel. "Bitcoin is currently hovering around $80,000 - I think the market will start a real big move, hopefully upward, in the next week or so, and many altcoins are also expected to break out of their current trading range."

Ethereum has moved higher with the broader crypto market this week, but its rebound is now facing a technical test that may decide whether the move has real strength or only a reflection of Bitcoin’s momentum.

A recent technical outlook points to a shortfall on the ETH daily candlestick chart, as the price continues to stall below the upper end of its rising channel despite repeated attempts to extend the rally.

Ethereum’s Rally Is Showing A Shortfall
Technical analysis of the Ethereum daily candlestick timeframe chart shows that Ethereum has been trading inside a rising channel since February 2026. This is a structure that, in theory, should allow bulls to progressively push the price toward its upper boundary.

The structure has produced a sequence of higher lows, which is usually a good sign. However, the problem is that ETH has not matched that strength on the upper side of the pattern, at least in May.

According to a crypto analyst that goes by the name Ardi on the social media platform X, the channel’s upper boundary currently is around $2,520, but ETH’s recent advances have repeatedly stalled around $2,420. That leaves the price about 6% below the channel high, creating a shortfall.

The daily structure is also not fully bullish. While ETH has reclaimed its short- and medium-term moving averages, the 200-day EMA is still above the current price, meaning the recovery is still incomplete.

The concern becomes more serious because Bitcoin has already achieved what Ethereum has not. The Bitcoin price has reached the upper side of its own channel structure to create a higher high around $81,000, meaning Bitcoin has been leading the market rally more cleanly.

Donald Trump announces three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine

President Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a three-day ceasefire, set to run from May 9 through May 11. The pause in fighting coincides with Russia’s annual Victory Day celebrations, which commemorate the Soviet Union’s role in defeating Nazi Germany in World War Two.

The agreement calls for a complete suspension of military activities between the two nations. It also includes a prisoner exchange, with 1,000 captives being returned by each side.

What the ceasefire actually involves

Both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed the deal.

Zelenskyy responded to the announcement with a touch of dark humor, issuing a decree stating that Ukrainian forces would not target Russia’s Victory Day parade.

Zelenskyy also affirmed Ukraine’s commitment to the prisoner return component, framing it as part of broader diplomatic reciprocity.

Trump expressed hope that the temporary truce could serve as a stepping stone toward a more permanent resolution, characterizing it as a potential signal that the lengthy conflict might be approaching its end.

A history of failed pauses

This is not the first attempt at a ceasefire tied to Victory Day. Ukraine had proposed its own cessation of hostilities for May 5-6, a bid that did not produce a lasting agreement. Russia separately floated a pause covering May 8-9, also pegged to the holiday period.

Neither of those earlier efforts resulted in a mutually accepted deal.

Victory Day is deeply significant in Russian national identity, celebrating the defeat of fascism. Moscow has frequently invoked that legacy to frame its military operations in Ukraine, a framing that Kyiv and most Western nations reject.
