Nvidia CEO urges UK to invest in AI infrastructure

During London Tech Week, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang highlighted a critical gap in the UK's ambitions in artificial intelligence: While the country is home to exceptional talent, it lacks the computing infrastructure needed to be a global leader.

In a statement alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Huang described the moment as ideal for the development of artificial intelligence, but warned that without significant investment in infrastructure, the UK risks falling behind the US and China, which are rapidly expanding their AI capacity through supercomputers and data centres.

In response, Starmer pledged £1 billion to develop the UK’s AI infrastructure to help bridge the gap. Additional initiatives include a regulatory “sandbox” from the Financial Conduct Authority and a pledge of £1.5 billion in investment from fintech company Liquidity.

While countries like the US and China dominate the AI space through industry-research collaborations or commercial applications, Europe is struggling to keep up. But Huang sees an opportunity: He believes AI will soon be as important to industry as electricity, and the UK, with the right tools, could become a key player.

Huang's European tour continues with visits to Paris, Berlin and Brussels, where he promotes Nvidia's vision of artificial intelligence as a critical infrastructure that will shape the future of every major sector. artificial-intelligenceai55621-768x512.webp
