'7 out of 7 times' - Why Bitcoin beats Gold and S&P 500 in every crisis Bitcoin has been here for a long time, and despite its volatility, the leading cryptocurrency has stood

the test of time since its launch.

However, the years 2020 to 2026 mark an important year for Bitcoin as it managed to outperform in all crisis.

Starting with the first US-Iran escalation on the 3rd of January 2020, Bitcoin [BTC] had surged by 20% as compared to gold, which surged by just 6%.

On the contrary, the S&P 500 stock was down by 7%. In the same year, during the COVID-19 outbreak in March, BTC was up by 21%, whereas the S&P 500 and gold were up by 2% and 3%, respectively.

Similar patterns were seen in the Russia-Ukraine war, the U.S.-Iran war of 2026, and also during the U.S. banking crisis.

However, it was only in 2024, when a Yen carry trade unwind led to gold surging by 9% and the S&P 500 surging by 7%, whereas BTC was up by only 3%.

That taboo has been well and truly broken, with a number of major institutional investors buying up Bitcoin in recent years.
The floodgates first opened when cloud software company MicroStrategy bought $425 million worth of Bitcoin in August and September 2020. Others followed suit, including payments processor Block and electric car manufacturer Tesla.
Per BitcoinTreasuries, public companies holding Bitcoin now account for 5.39% of the total supply of 21 million $BTC. These are the biggest holders as of this writing.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz on Friday sparked a general risk appetite in the markets: US stocks surged, oil prices plummeted, US Treasury yields fell, and the market believed the worst was over and global energy supply disruptions had eased.

However, these moves may prove premature.

At 9:20 a.m. on Saturday, the calm was first broken by reports that two oil tankers were denied passage in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump then publicly pressured the US to continue its blockade of Iranian ports if no agreement was reached by Wednesday. At 4 p.m. that day, Iran announced the reimposition of restrictions on the strait and opened fire on ships attempting to pass—two Indian vessels turned back to the Persian Gulf after being shelled, bringing shipping in the strait to a near standstill.

Traders reacted quickly on TradeXYZ, with crude oil contracts rising approximately 4.52% from the weekend close, while S&P 500 contracts fell nearly 0.8%.

 Trump then shifted his stance, revealing that Special Envoy Steve Witkoff would travel to Pakistan on Tuesday to meet with Iranian officials, potentially extending the negotiation window to Wednesday.

Following this, Trump posted on Truth Social, stating, "The deal we've offered is very fair and reasonable, and I hope they accept it because if they don't, the United States will destroy every power plant and every bridge in Iran."

Iran clearly didn't buy it. At 1:53 AM on the 20th, Iran announced its refusal to participate in the second round of negotiations; according to Axios, Tehran judged that the US might launch an attack before the ceasefire expired on Tuesday night.


Affected by this news, crude oil prices surged again, erasing the highs of the 18th, while the S&P 500 index fell below the lows of the 18th.
