The recent Drift Protocol hack appears to be unfolding in a similar way. Initial market sentiment was dominated by panic after the exploit led to nearly $285 million in losses.

Now, recovery efforts are underway, but attention is shifting from the hack itself to the key players involved in the response.

As AMBCrypto earlier noted, Tether has stepped in with a $150 million recovery proposal for Drift Protocol, while Circle has declined to freeze the exploited USDC tied to the incident.

The relevant metrics are ODL volume, corridor coverage, and the share of partners routing traffic through XRP, not the total RippleNet client count.

Global cross-border payment volumes range from $130 trillion to $150 trillion annually, according to SWIFT-linked estimates.

Even $30 billion in annual ODL volume is meaningful for XRP but marginal for global payments. Real adoption on this axis would look like ODL volumes compounding from the current $15 billion and the baseline, more than half of RippleNet clients opting into XRP, and corridor expansion beyond the APAC remittance niches that dominate today.

On-chain activity beyond speculation
XRPL handled roughly 1.8 million transactions per day in the third quarter of 2025, up about 9% quarter-on-quarter from 1.6 million in the previous quarter, with typical finality in 3 to 5 seconds.

Average daily active sender addresses reached about 25,300, with 447,200 new addresses created in the quarter, bringing total addresses to roughly 6.9 million. Weekly payment counts are up roughly 430% versus 2023 levels. Payments remain the dominant use case.

“Payment” transactions accounted for about 55.7% of total activity in the third quarter of 2025, with daily payment counts around 989,600.

$XRP is trading well below its January highs. The broader crypto market has been volatile, geopolitical uncertainty has kept risk appetite suppressed, and the regulatory clarity that everyone has been waiting for keeps getting pushed back by a few more weeks.

None of that has moved Brad Garlinghouse.

The Ripple CEO has given a string of major public appearances in 2026, and the message has been remarkably consistent across all of them. Not defensive. Not cautious. Quietly confident in a way that either shows conviction or extraordinary discipline, possibly both.

January: Davos and the Institutional Gap

Garlinghouse opened 2026 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he framed $XRP not as a speculative asset but as neutral financial infrastructure for a world increasingly fragmented by sanctions and geopolitical tension.

He pointed to stablecoin transaction volume growing from $19 trillion in 2024 to $33 trillion in 2025, roughly 75% year-over-year growth, as evidence that the infrastructure story was already playing out in the numbers. At the same time, he made a point of noting that institutional interest from firms like BlackRock and Vanguard had not yet been fully reflected in prices.

“I don’t think institutional interest is priced into the crypto market as much as I would have expected right now,” he said.

Nomura’s latest survey suggests Japanese institutions trust stablecoins issued by major financial institutions most, a potential hurdle for RLUSD even in a market where XRP has long enjoyed unusual traction.

Japan has long been one of Ripple's most fertile markets. SBI's investment in Ripple dates to 2016, SBI Remit launched Japan's first XRP-enabled international remittance flow in 2021, and SBI VC Trade counts XRP among its most popular assets.

When Ripple and SBI announced in August 2025 that SBI VC Trade intended to distribute RLUSD in Japan, the move read as a natural extension of an already deep local partnership.

A recent survey of 518 investment professionals in Japan, conducted by Nomura and Laser Digital between December 2025 and January 2026 and released Apr. 16, found that 63% of respondents identified potential uses for stablecoins, spanning treasury management, cross-border payments, crypto investing, and tokenized securities.

Across JPY, USD, and EUR denominations, the stablecoins that drew the highest institutional trust were those issued by major financial institutions.

Japan may be Ripple's friendliest proving ground and precisely where the limits of crypto-branded stablecoins become visible.
Ripple's position in Japan goes beyond standard distribution agreements. SBI Ripple Asia, a joint venture formed from SBI's 2016 investment in Ripple, has operated as part of Ripple's regional infrastructure for nearly a decade.

SBI Remit began using Ripple Payments in 2017 and expanded XRP-based remittance corridors into the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia in September 2023.
