Bitcoin whales flip bearish – $74 million Hyperliquid short raises squeeze risk
Broader crypto momentum had already started weakening before whale positioning abruptly rotated toward aggressive Bitcoin [BTC] downside exposure across Hyperliquid [HYPE] markets.

Traders also became more defensive once larger speculative wallets started reducing altcoin risk beneath softer market continuation.

Trader Evaded later closed HYPE and Zcash [ZEC] longs worth roughly $2.85 million and $2.36 million after holding positions for several days.

However, the wallet also absorbed nearly $591,000 in Ethereum [ETH] losses before shifting aggressively into a 15x leveraged Bitcoin short.

That position later expanded toward roughly 990 BTC, worth nearly $74.84 million, while unrealized profits climbed beyond $783,000 beneath weakening market conditions.

The rotation increasingly reflected how smart-money traders are positioning for higher volatility and possible downside continuation across broader crypto markets.

USD/JPY edged lower on Monday as yen firmed on improving optimism surrounding a potential U.S.-Iran agreement.

Trading conditions are expected to remain relatively thin due to the U.S. Memorial Day holiday and market holidays across parts of Europe, which could lead to reduced liquidity and potentially sharper price swings during the session.. Yield differentials continue to play a major role in supporting USD/JPY. The spread between Japanese government bond yields and U.S. Treasury two-year yields remains relatively wide, favoring the dollar, although the gap in longer-dated 10-year yields has narrowed somewhat. Markets are currently pricing in at least one additional interest rate hike this year from the Federal Reserve, with some investors even considering the possibility of further tightening rather than rate cuts. Meanwhile, the Bank of Japan is also expected to continue gradually normalizing policy, with markets anticipating a potential 25 basis point rate hike at its June meeting..

Ethereum Price Stuck In Downtrend Despite Strong Spot Demand
The Ethereum price resumed its downtrend on Friday, May 22, after consolidating throughout the week. As a result of this distribution round, the second-largest cryptocurrency dropped by approximately 6.2%, forming a local bottom at $2,020. 
Although Ethereum has an ostensibly bearish structure, a recent on-chain analysis has revealed notable buying activity in its market. Yet, the Ethereum price weakness seems almost unchecked — below are the details of its current on-chain dynamics. 
Spot Buyers Step In, But ETH Continues To Fall
In a recent Quicktake post on the CryptoQuant platform, on-chain analyst Carmelo Alemán outlined the factors behind Ethereum’s current price weakness. In the analysis, Alemán revealed that the altcoin’s current downward trend is not due to a lack of demand in the spot market.
Alemán stated, as a matter of fact, that the Spot Taker CVD is reflecting that Ethereum’s spot market is still Taker Buy Dominant. This means aggressive market buyers are executing more buy orders than sellers are executing sell orders over a given period.
In spite of this, the Ethereum price doesn’t seem to be gaining significant strength from a broader perspective. As the Spot Taker CVD flashed the aforementioned sign, the price of ETH actually contracted from $2,339 on May 11 to $2,065.8 by May 22.
However, it is worth noting that spot trading activity has also contracted sharply since May 11, with spot volume reportedly falling from approximately 470,770 ETH to 256,963 ETH (a decline of over 45%); this amounts to a 52.65% drop from around $1.10 billion to $521.4 million.
