Arkham tracks 53% of Zcash privacy transactions

Zcash privacy claims faced a direct challenge after Arkham Intelligence linked 53% of $ZEC transactions to identified entities.

Blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence published research revealing it had labeled more than 53% of all Zcash transactions, attributing approximately $420 billion in $ZEC volume to identifiable individuals and institutions. The research, published in December 2025, triggered immediate debate about the true extent of Zcash’s opt-in privacy model.

Arkham’s tracking covers 48% of all transaction inputs and outputs and links 37% of total $ZEC balances, approximately $2.5 billion, to named entities. The firm did not crack Zcash’s cryptography. It combined entity clustering, exchange data, known government seizures, and transparent address analysis to attribute activity to real-world actors.

Why Arkham can track most Zcash activity but not all of it

The critical distinction is between transparent and shielded transactions. Zcash’s privacy is opt-in. Users choose between T-addresses, which are fully visible on the public ledger, and Z-addresses, which use zero-knowledge proofs to shield sender, recipient, and amount.

“[Arkham] didn’t actually deanonymize any $ZEC that was held at rest in the shielded pool,” Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox said in response to the announcement. Tracking such transactions would be “impossible because the information just isn’t there,” he added.

A crypto PAC affiliated with Fairshake has poured $5 million into a Texas congressional runoff ahead of Tuesday’s vote.

Protect Progress, an affiliate of the crypto-backed Fairshake PAC, spent $5 million supporting Democratic challenger Christian Menefee in Tuesday’s Texas 18th District runoff and a further $2.8 million opposing incumbent Al Green, according to Federal Election Commission filings. Fairshake reported $193 million cash on hand heading into 2026.

The Kalshi prediction market gave Menefee a 91% probability of winning, with Polymarket at a similar figure. Total betting volume on the parallel Texas Republican Senate race between Ken Paxton and John Cornyn topped $16 million, with Paxton holding roughly 96% odds following a Trump endorsement.

Al Green has been among the more vocal crypto critics in Congress. He voted against both the $GENIUS Act stablecoin bill and the Clarity Act, and Stand With Crypto awarded him an F grade. “I am an unbought, liberated, unafraid Democrat, unbought by crypto cash,” Green told colleagues on the House floor, accusing Menefee of making a “deal with the devil” by accepting Fairshake support.

Fairshake, backed primarily by Ripple Labs and Coinbase, also secured the endorsement of the Blockchain Leadership Fund, backed by Anchorage Digital and Chainlink Labs, in the Menefee race. Menefee was elected to Congress in a January 2026 special election and quickly became the industry’s preferred candidate over Green.

Kevin Warsh was sworn in as the 17th Chair of the Federal Reserve on May 22. With this, he effectively replaced Jerome Powell after a narrow Senate vote and inherited sticky inflation, a $6.7 trillion balance sheet, and an increasingly Fed-sensitive crypto market.

His record as a former Fed governor, Bush-era policy adviser, and Wall Street financier points to a more hawkish, less interventionist Fed. Markets are pricing the shift in real time, and crypto traders are watching closely.

1. Hawkish on Inflation With a Smaller Balance Sheet in Mind

Warsh has long argued the post-2008 Fed grew too large and too active. He resigned in 2011 over additional quantitative easing and has spent the years since calling for scarcer reserves, a leaner balance sheet, and tighter discipline on inflation.

That framework now meets the moment. The federal funds target sits at 3.50 to 3.75%, headline inflation climbed to 3.3% in March on an Iran-driven oil shock, and the March dot plot pencils in just one cut for 2026.

At his Senate confirmation hearing, Warsh framed the central bank’s delayed inflation response as structural rather than a one-off mistake.

“Once you let inflation take hold in the economy, it is more expensive and harder to bring it down, and so the fatal policy error going back four or five years is still a legacy that we are dealing with… we need a regime change in the conduct of policy.”

Traders read that as a signal for faster quantitative tightening (QT) over near-term rate cuts.
