One of the most hated rules for small traders is on its way out after the SEC approved a change that could reshape retail risk-taking.

The SEC has approved a rule change that eliminates one of Wall Street's most recognizable barriers for small traders: the old $25,000 minimum tied to pattern day-trading restrictions.

Regulators signed off on FINRA's proposal to scrap a framework that long made it harder for smaller investors to make rapid-fire stock trades, replacing it with a system aimed at measuring intraday risk.

The change might not be a rewrite of crypto regulation per se, but it carries certain implications for Bitcoin because the same retail crowd that speculates in stocks and options often moves through crypto too.

Day trading means buying and selling a stock on the same day, trying to profit from short-term price swings rather than holding for weeks or months.

From smelters to servers: Alcoa to cash in on crypto’s thirst for The largest aluminum producer in the U.S., Alcoa, is close to selling its idle Massena East smelter in upstate New York to bitcoin firm New York Digital Investment Group (NYDIG), as it offloads dormant assets and taps demand for energy-ready industrial sites.
The company’s chief executive officer, Bill Oplinger, said the company is in advanced talks and expects the deal to close “in the middle part of this year,” Bloomberg reports.
The site, located along the St. Lawrence River, has sat idle since 2014 when Alcoa shut it down due to high operating costs and global competition.

The appeal lies in the site's power, not the metal itself. Aluminum smelters are built to run around the clock, drawing large amounts of electricity through dedicated substations and transmission lines. When they close, that infrastructure remains.

For bitcoin miners and data center developers, this can cut years off the time required to secure grid access.
Massena East also has access to hydropower from the New York Power Authority, a draw for firms seeking low-cost and carbon-free energy.

Bitcoin mining firm NYDIG already has skin in the game at the Massena, New York site — it holds a stake in Coinmint, which runs mining hardware there under a long-term lease. Now the company wants the land itself.

A Deal Years In The Making

Alcoa’s Massena East smelter went dark in 2014 after energy costs climbed and overseas competition cut into margins. The sprawling facility along the St. Lawrence River has sat idle ever since.

Based on reports, Alcoa CEO Bill Oplinger told Bloomberg the two companies are deep in talks and expects a deal to close sometime in the middle of 2026. Financial terms were not disclosed.

For NYDIG, the appeal goes beyond location. Industrial smelters are wired for round-the-clock heavy operations — they come with substations, transmission lines, and grid connections that can handle enormous power loads.

Data center operators and crypto miners often wait years to build that kind of infrastructure from scratch. At Massena, it already exists. The site also draws power from the New York Power Authority’s hydroelectric supply, which cuts costs and reduces the carbon footprint of whatever runs there next.

Old Industry, New Tenants

Massena is not the only shuttered smelter drawing interest from the digital sector. Earlier this year, Century Aluminum sold its Hawesville, Kentucky facility to TeraWulf for $200 million.

TeraWulf plans to turn the site into a high-performance computing and AI campus. Since that deal closed, TeraWulf shares have climbed 80% year-to-date, according to Yahoo Finance data.
