European banks are at risk of losing customers to rivals with better crypto tools


A growing share of European investors may change banks to access better crypto services, according to a new study from Boerse Stuttgart Digital, signaling a shift in how digital assets are shaping retail finance across the region.

The survey, conducted by market research firm Marketagent between August 2025 and January 2026, gathered responses from 6,000 individuals across Germany, Italy, Spain and France. It found that 35% of respondents would consider switching banks if another institution offered stronger crypto investment options.

That figure rises to 40% in Spain, the highest among the countries surveyed, followed by Italy at 35%, France at 33% and Germany at 29%.

At the same time, crypto ownership continues to expand. Around 25% of respondents said they have already invested in digital assets, with Spain again leading at nearly 28%. Germany followed at 25%, while Italy and France trailed slightly.

Despite crypto’s origins outside traditional finance, the study suggests banks remain central to its next phase. Investors were more than twice as likely to trust their primary bank for crypto services than specialized platforms.

This trust advantage comes as many investors still struggle to understand the asset class. More than 60% said they feel poorly informed about crypto, while 69% described it as too complex.

Concerns around regulation also persist, with 76% viewing crypto as insufficiently regulated and therefore risky.

The findings point to a potential opening for banks. Nearly one in five respondents expect their bank to offer crypto access within the next three years, suggesting that digital assets are moving from a niche offering to a standard feature in retail finance.

The BIS General Manager has said that existing stablecoins fall short of the requirements for a widely accepted and used payment instrument.

Stablecoins Remain A “Niche” Payment Instrument
Pablo Hernández de Cos, General Manager at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), spoke on the topic of stablecoins at a Bank of Japan seminar in Tokyo on Monday. The BIS is an international financial institution that serves as a bank for central banks. It’s owned by constituent central banks, of which there are 63 in total at the moment. The institution has been vocal about its concerns regarding stablecoins in the past.

Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies that have their price tied to a fiat currency. In recent years, these tokens have gained popularity, inviting regulation from major economic hubs.

Since stables run on blockchain technology, they naturally offer relatively cheap 24/7 transactions. This has made their main use, besides being a store of value, as a mode of payments.

Stablecoins try to mimic fiat currencies, but do they count as “money”? de Cos has discussed the two features that decide the “moneyness” of an instrument: singleness and interoperability.

First, singleness is the idea that different forms of money should be perfectly substitutable at par across financial intermediaries and platforms. In fiat economics, this is facilitated by central banks. For the decentralized stablecoins, there is no such central settlement so deviations can emerge.

Though, these differences tend to be relatively modest. “Yet confidence shocks can widen discounts abruptly and, when they do, users may refuse to accept certain stablecoins, as seen on several occasions in the past,” said de Cos.

OCBC Launches GOLDX Tokenized Gold Fund on ETH and SOL

Following subscription, GOLDX tokens are delivered directly to investors' blockchain wallets, OCBC said Monday.
Singapore's OCBC bank has launched GOLDX, a tokenized physical gold fund issued on both the Ethereum and Solana blockchains, in partnership with its asset management arm Lion Global Investors and digital asset exchange DigiFT.

The token is aimed at institutional investors, hedge funds, and asset managers, and can be purchased using stablecoins or fiat currencies. Following subscription, GOLDX tokens are delivered directly to investors' blockchain wallets, OCBC said Monday.

GOLDX provides on-chain exposure to the LionGlobal Singapore Physical Gold Fund, which launched in December and held approximately $525 million in assets under management as of April 16. OCBC said the product is designed to attract Web3 participants and high-net-worth individuals operating in blockchain and cryptocurrency ecosystems.

Kenneth Lai, head of global markets at OCBC, described the launch as part of the bank's broader strategy to bridge traditional finance with decentralized finance. "We believe digital assets will play an increasingly important role in financial services," Lai said.

The launch comes as tokenizedRWA assets on public blockchains reached over $29 billion in value, up more than 10% over the past 30 days, according to data from RWA(dot)xyz. Gold has emerged as one of the more actively tokenized asset classes within that market.

OCBC has been building on-chain infrastructure since 2023, when it issued its first tokenized equity-linked note for accredited investors. The bank reported total assets of approximately $526 billion as of December 2025.
