Bitcoin erases weekend gains as US-Iran ceasefire falls under pressure
Bitcoin erased its weekend gains as it fell below $74,000 on Sunday after the US military seized an Iranian cargo ship, putting pressure on a ceasefire between the two countries.

Bitcoin (BTC) had soared above $78,300 late Friday on Coinbase, its highest price since early February, but dropped to between $75,000 and $76,000 over Saturday and early Sunday after Iran said Saturday it would close vital oil routes in the Strait of Hormuz.

The cryptocurrency then sank sharply late on Sunday to briefly trade below $74,000 after the US military said it opened fire on, and later seized, an Iranian cargo ship it claimed tried to run its blockade of Iranian ports, with Tehran accusing the US of violating an agreed ceasefire.

The two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran, which had helped boost the markets and temper oil prices, is set to end on Wednesday.

Tehran has vowed to retaliate over the US military’s seizure of the ship and has rejected a new round of peace talks slated for Monday in Islamabad, Pakistan, due to the US blockade, Iranian state media reported.

US stock futures sank Sunday night amid rising tensions, with S&P 500 futures dropping 0.8%, Nasdaq-100 futures falling 0.6% and Dow Jones futures declining 0.9%, or about 450 points.

Oil futures also soared amid the hostilities and Iran’s threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, with crude oil futures rising over 4.5% to over $95 a barrel.

The Crypto Fear & Greed index rose by two points to a score of 29 out of 100 on Monday, its highest score since late January, but which still indicated a sentiment of “fear.”

BIP-361 Proposal Akin to Seizing Bitcoin From Users: Expert
Bitcoin’s latest BIP 361 upgrade proposal has ignited fierce debate regarding the future of the premier cryptocurrency and the looming Quantum threat. Top crypto executive Dan Beld compared the latest proposal to an asset seizure, something that seriously violates the very foundation of Bitcoin’s principles.
He didn’t beat around the bush when it came to the controversial BIP 361 upgrade. He argued that minimizing legacy signatures and freezing unmigrated coins would erode Bitcoin’s core strengths: its immutable monetary policy and status as the hardest asset to seize. 
BIP 361, titled Post Quantum Migration and Legacy Signature Sunset, is the latest upgrade currently on the table to help quantum-proof the network against the looming computing disruption.

The crux of the proposal is that roughly 34% of BTC’s supply, including 1.7 million BTC stored in the legacy Pay-to-Public-Key (P2PK) format, is at imminent risk due to groundbreaking quantum developments. The entire 1.1 million stash mined by Satoshi Nakamoto during the early days of the network is also included in these legacy addresses.

BIP 361 involves a three-phase upgrade plan for the network, with the first phase blocking legacy P2PK addresses from receiving BTC, followed by a second phase that would invalidate ECDSA/Schnorr spends entirely, rendering unmigrated UTXOs unspendable. A third phase would implement a zero-knowledge recovery plan that would allow any remaining BTC to be migrated to upgraded addresses.

Expert Warns Bitcoin More Exposed to Quantum Risk Than XRP

Amid ongoing discussions about whether quantum technology could threaten blockchain security, Vet, a popular validator on the XRP Ledger, believes Bitcoin may be more exposed to future quantum risks than XRP.

In a recent review, he explained that about 300,000 XRP accounts, holding roughly 2.4 billion XRP, have never made outgoing transactions. Since these wallets have only received funds, their public keys have not been exposed on-chain, which makes them theoretically more secure against quantum attacks.

He also noted that just two long-inactive accounts hold around 21 million XRP, with their public keys exposed. This represents only about 0.03% of the total supply, showing that vulnerable dormant XRP wallets are extremely rare.

While most active XRP accounts do have exposed keys, Vet said users can still change or “rotate” their keys if needed. He contrasted this with Bitcoin, which may face higher theoretical risk due to a larger number of dormant coins and older transaction formats that can expose public keys.

“Your XRP is safe. There are no known quantum computers capable of threatening public blockchains today. By the time that changes, the industry will have found a solution,” he stated.

Notably, the broader discussion around quantum risks has gained momentum following recent research from Google. According to its researchers, a quantum computer may need fewer than 500,000 physical qubits to break the cryptographic security of Bitcoin and Ethereum, about 20 times less than earlier estimates.

In experimental simulations, Google tested circuits using between 1,200 and 1,450 logical qubits, requiring tens of millions of quantum gates. Under standard assumptions, the computation could take between 9 and 12 minutes, potentially within Bitcoin’s 10-minute block time.

Aave has come under significant pressure following the recent Kelp DAO bridge exploit, which had wider ripple effects across the DeFi ecosystem.
After attackers reportedly used around $292 million in stolen rsETH as collateral on Aave V3, the protocol experienced a sharp reaction in the market. Aave’s total value locked (TVL) dropped by approximately $6.6 billion, while its native token fell about 16%.
Importantly, Aave’s core smart contracts were not directly compromised. However, the situation still created substantial risk exposure within the system. Around $196 million in bad debt is now concentrated in the rsETH–wrapped ETH market on Ethereum, one of Aave’s most heavily used liquidity pairs.
