Thorn noted that BTC mining started with individuals running software on personal computers but has since shifted to industrial-scale operations requiring ASIC hardware and large energy infrastructure. AI, by contrast, began in centralized data clusters and may decentralize as open-source models become lighter and cheaper to run locally. "If local models keep getting smaller, cheaper, and more efficient, AI may become increasingly personal and on-device," he said.

The divergence matters for crypto's foundational promise. Thorn said that if BTC mining continues to concentrate among fewer, larger operators, it could raise concerns about the network's long-term resilience to political or regulatory shocks.

Crypto exchange KuCoin reported on Friday that mining BTC has become increasingly unviable in parts of the United States, with costs exceeding $100,000 per coin in some regions due to rising energy prices. This is driving hash rate toward lower-cost jurisdictions, with Paraguay and Ethiopia emerging as leading destinations because of surplus hydroelectric power.

KuCoin said this geographic shift could strengthen the network by making it less dependent on any single country's political or environmental conditions. Spreading mining infrastructure across continents reduces concentration risk even as the overall industry consolidates around industrial-scale players.

On the AI side, edge computing is the primary driver of potential decentralization.

Michael Saylor's Bitcoin treasury firm Strategy has added another $1 billion worth of Bitcoin to its holdings, with the latest purchase financed through its STRC preferred stock offering.

Strategy funded its latest purchases by selling over 10 million shares of its variable-rate preferred shares, STRC, last week, raising about $1 billion.

SEC reverses course on crypto enforcement and disowns its own playbook

The same agency that pointed to crypto enforcement as proof of its toughness in late 2024 is now holding up those cases as evidence of institutional overreach.

The SEC is now publicly distancing itself from the crypto enforcement strategy it once showcased as proof of its toughness. In its latest annual review, the agency casts several recently dismissed crypto cases as evidence that prior leadership chased volume and headlines over measurable investor harm.

In November 2024, the SEC celebrated 583 enforcement actions and a record $8.2 billion in remedies, saying crypto was proof it could keep pace with emerging threats. This week, the same agency published a 2025 review calling that approach a mistake.

The new report said prior resources were misapplied, criticized the pursuit of “media headlines,” and described the past year as a “necessary course correction” that included dismissing seven crypto registration-related cases.

While this is a clear sign that the SEC is easing up on crypto, the report also carries a silent admission. We see now that it's publicly disowning the enforcement strategy it was bragging about just over a year ago.
The fiscal 2024 review was triumphant by design.

The SEC reported 583 total enforcement actions and said the $8.2 billion in monetary remedies it gathered that year was the highest in the agency's history. It said its enforcement division was keeping pace with emerging threats and listed crypto prominently among them. The Terraform Labs and Do Kwon case, which alone accounted for roughly 56% of the year's total remedies, was treated as a signature achievement and as proof that the SEC could take on complex, high-profile defendants and win.
