Industry Groups Urge U.S. Government to Increase Supply of Storage Chips

On June 4, a coalition of American business groups stated that the global shortage of storage chips, driven by the surge in artificial intelligence, poses an increasingly serious risk to various industries, including automotive manufacturers and medical device producers. The coalition has urged the Trump administration to assist in increasing the supply of these critical components. On Wednesday, nine trade associations representing various sectors sent a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Mnuchin and Commerce Secretary Ross, warning that the shortage of storage chips could disrupt critical supply chains and potentially drive up consumer goods prices in the short term. The coalition pointed out that the expansion of AI data centers has consumed a disproportionate amount of storage chip capacity, leading to unprecedented spikes in storage chip prices and a significant reduction in the supply of storage chips available for manufacturing and consumer markets. In the letter, the industry groups urged the Trump administration to collaborate with storage chip manufacturers and chip purchasers to expand capacity within the U.S. and its allies. They also suggested leveraging trade agreement mechanisms or initiatives related to the CHIPS Act to ensure supply chain security, focusing on securing supply across various market segments.
