Patience is the trade': Why Coinbase is cautious over Bitcoin in Q3

Coinbase analysts have adopted a "neutral" Bitcoin and broader crypto market outlook for Q3 2026. After printing a yearly low of $57.8K in H2 2026, $BTC has recovered by nearly 10% but has failed to reclaim $68K or the $70K level. According to Coinbase analysts, led by Colin Basco, Bitcoin appears to be transitioning from a corrective phase toward accumulation. He cited $BTC's Supply in Loss metric, which was at 50% and matched previous market cycle bottoms.

With valuation compressed, we read this as the early innings of a bottoming process rather than a durable low already in place.

Fidelity recently echoed a similar bottoming stance.

However, he added that the macro backdrop remained "hawkish," and cited fears of Fed rate hikes and renewed U.S.-Iran tensions.

Caution is still warranted. Re-escalation of the US-Iran conflict, resurging oil prices, and selling from prominent digital asset treasuries all present near-term bearish catalysts.

Inside the EU’s new country-level crypto ban — Here’s why HTX and 13 platforms were targeted

The European Union (EU) has widened its sanctions targeting Russia by banning Justin Sun-owned $HTX and 13 other crypto platforms. The platforms span the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Panama, Georgia, the Marshall Islands, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus. They include BitPapa, A7 networks and more.

According to the EU Council, these platforms have acted as conduits for blocked Russian entities to move funds and bypass existing sanctions. The transaction ban prohibits EU persons and firms from doing business with these crypto platforms.

In particular, Justin Sun-owned $HTX’s appearance on the sanctioned list is very noteworthy. The exchange was banned by the U.K in May.

To counter possible freezing of funds, $HTX moved its reserves to an unknown third party and has been switching hot wallets, making it difficult to conduct sanction screening.

However, the EU’s aggressive action to ban crypto services in a third country could exert more pressure and signal an evolution of crypto in sanction enforcement.

Russia resorted to crypto for oil exports and other international trade after being sanctioned and subsequently removed from SWIFT. It fast-tracked its crypto regulatory framework during this period. Crypto’s touted non-sovereign status made it a popular alternative to move funds for most sanctioned countries. In fact, Venezuela and Iran also went the same crypto route to bypass Western sanctions.

However, the EU’s new ability to ban offshore platforms, a third country, or even cut off an entire regional bloc, will likely become an effective regulatory pressure. According to Chainalysis,

Small farmers, construction firms, and independent retailers carry enormous climate-driven financial risk but have almost no practical way to hedge it. The weather derivatives market-designed for precisely that-sits firmly in the hands of large energy companies, insurers, and agricultural conglomerates. A CoinDesk op-ed now argues that tokenization could be the mechanism that finally pushes these instruments beyond institutional walls and onto Main Street balance sheets.

A market built for the few

Conventional weather derivatives-

temperature-based contracts, rainfall swaps, hurricane bonds-require capital, prime brokerage relationships, and legal infrastructure that shut out smaller players. A mid-sized farm facing a drought can't easily buy a tailored seasonal payout. The paper-based and over-the-counter nature of these contracts adds cost and complexity. In practice, most of the economy absorbs weather shocks directly.

Tokenization changes the math. By representing weather-linked cash flows as smart contracts on public blockchains, a farmer in Brazil or a roofing contractor in Florida could, in theory, purchase a parametric hedge without going through a bank. Oracles feed verified weather data on-chain, automation handles settlement, and fractional ownership lets users buy only the protection they need. The core logic isn't new to DeFi, but the real-world impact would be.
