Anniversary Stacks Bitcoin Staking Upgrade Vote Passes With 99%, Muneeb Says

The Stacks community approved SIP-045, the Bitcoin Staking upgrade, with more than 99% of votes cast in favor, Stacks co-creator Muneeb Ali said, setting up a hard fork targeted for around July 29 at roughly Bitcoin block 907,740.

The upgrade, formally "PoX-5: Bitcoin Staking and Emission Schedule Alignment," lets participants lock $BTC in a timelocked contract on Bitcoin's base layer - under their own keys - and pair it with locked $STX to earn yield paid in bitcoin. A companion proposal, SIP-044, which brings Clarity 6 and new staking post-conditions, passed alongside it. Voting opened July 6; hard-fork votes require at least 80% approval from stacked $STX.

"Bitcoin is the world's most trusted asset precisely because of its design and safety principles on the L1," Ali said when the Bitcoin Staking whitepaper was published in May. "Holders can now earn yield denominated in $BTC, trustlessly, while their Bitcoin stays exactly where it belongs.'

How the Mechanism Works

Stakers fund a timelocked UTXO on Bitcoin using OP_CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY, pair it with an $STX lock equal to at least 5% of the bond, and commit for roughly six months. The Stacks contract verifies the Bitcoin-side lock with an SPV proof - no custodian or trusted bridge. Yield

Ethereum ($ETH) price has slipped below the $1,900 mark after facing rejection near the $1,920 resistance, triggering a wave of bearish sentiment across the market. According to Santiment, the ratio of positive-to-negative Ethereum commentary has dropped to one of its lowest levels in recent weeks, a pattern that previously preceded a 14% rally on June 27 and a 7% advance on July 11. While the latest pullback has weakened short-term momentum, the recurrence of this sentiment extreme has renewed speculation over whether Ethereum is nearing another contrarian buying opportunity or preparing for a deeper correction.

Ethereum Exchange Reserves Continue to Decline

Ethereum's exchange reserves continue to trend lower, reinforcing the broader accumulation narrative despite the recent price pullback. According to CryptoQuant data, the amount of $ETH held across centralized exchanges has declined to 15.1 million $ETH, down from over 21 million $ETH a year ago. This marks one of the lowest reserve levels in recent years, indicating that investors are continuing to withdraw Ethereum from exchanges rather than keeping it available for immediate selling.

The persistent decline in exchange reserves suggests that a growing portion of $ETH is being moved into self-custody, staking protocols, or long-term investment wallets. Historically, shrinking exchange balances reduce the liquid supply available on the market, easing sell-side pressure and creating a more favorable environment for sustained price appreciation if demand strengthens

Payment firm Triple-A’s hot wallets have lost more than $9.7 million spanning multiple blockchains. 

On-chain analyst Specter flagged the outflows on X (formerly Twitter) earlier today. This comes amid a streak of exploits hitting crypto protocols this month.

Analyst Flags $9.7 Million Triple-A Wallet Drain 

The drain spanned across TRON (TRX), Ethereum (ETH), Polygon (POL), and Arbitrum (ARB). Attackers swapped the assets and bridged them to Ethereum.

The funds now sit in one wallet, 0x01F83B5d4fb30E8AA3daC1681B4048D9135253b1. That address holds roughly 5,227 ETH, worth about $9.7 million.

“It looks like the team are not aware as deposit are not disabled and every new deposit is being drained,” Specter posted earlier today.

Triple-A has not addressed the wallet outflows as of press time. BeInCrypto has reached out for comment.

Meanwhile, the drain adds to a difficult stretch for crypto security. On-chain trackers have logged a string of thefts across platforms in recent days. Lookonchain counted three separate attacks on July 23 worth $35.55 million.

Those hits included AFX Trade at $24.15 million, the Verus Ethereum bridge at $7.55 million, and B2 Network at $3.86 million. This marked Verus’ second exploit since May. Attackers drained roughly $11.58 million in digital assets on May 18.

Is Cardano's 500M ADA treasury push enough to reverse ecosystem stagnation? Cardano [$ADA] ranked among the weakest-performing crypto tokens in the market, losing significant ground since its launch. $ADA plunged to around $0.16 at press time, down from an all-time high near $3.10.

$ADA slipped 2.14% over the past 24 hours, while trading volume plummeted 23% to $177.3 million. Price action told only part of the story, though.

On-chain metrics did little to strengthen $ADA's recovery case.

Why is Cardano's network activity so weak?

$ADA's on-chain footprint pointed to real weakness in transaction flow.

The Cardano network logged just 21,700 transactions over the past day, a steep drop from roughly 57,000 at its peak.

That pattern held across recent trading and much of this year. Daily Transaction Count hovered between 11,000 and 20,000, a subdued range for a network of Cardano's standing.

By contrast, Active Addresses ticked up to roughly 13,860. That divergence suggested a larger pool of users still generated only limited on-chain activity.

In broader terms, Active Addresses mostly sat between 10,000 and 20,000. Thin address activity paired with a low Transaction Count weighed heavily on the chain's utility.
