Crypto is the canary in the coal mine for the quantum computing threat, experts sayAs estimates for “Q-Day” move closer, experts warn that crypto’s slow governance, not its cryptography, may be the biggest obstacle to defending against quantum attacks.Quantum computing is a risk factor for every encrypted system on the planet, including major banks. But crypto, due to the way it works, may be the technology that gets tested first.

"Cryptocurrencies are the canary in the coal mine," Eddy Zervigon, CEO of Quantum Xchange, said in an interview with CoinDesk. Zervigon's firm builds infrastructure to shield networks, including financial ones, from quantum-enabled attacks, and he's blunt about where the first casualty is likely to show up.

"That's the first place of attack because of the decentralized nature," Zervigon said. "Once you see it happening there, then you know that someone somewhere has a cryptographically relevant quantum computer."

EU Crypto Regulation Bars Belarusian Control of MiCA Firms

EU crypto regulation bars Belarusian control of European crypto service providers.

The restriction covers exchanges, transfers, advice and portfolio management.

Covered firms must apply the expanded prohibition from Aug. 25.

The European Union expanded its crypto regulation on July 23, targeting Belarusian ownership of regulated crypto firms.

Council Decision (Common Foreign and Security Policy) 2026/1847 extended the restriction across the bloc from Aug. 25.

The measure widened an existing prohibition covering wallet, account and custody providers. It now reaches all other crypto services defined under the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation.

The expansion matters because sanctions screening now overlaps directly with MiCA licensing. European firms face broader checks covering ownership, control and governing-body appointments.

MemeCore demand recovers amid sector-wide capital rotation

As the sector-wide momentum shifted, M traders also rushed to position themselves, fearing they would miss out.

As a result, the memecoin's Open Interest climbed by 9.4% to $25.66 million. Such a jump in Ol suggested increased participation as traders opened new positions.

Meanwhile, the memecoin's Long/Short Ratio jumped above 1 across exchanges. The overall ratio was around 1.07 as of this writing, reflecting high demand for long positions.

This implies that traders mostly opened long positions, indicating bullishness as traders expected the market to continue rising
