Nasdaq winning SEC approval to move stocks onchain shows how Wall Street is taking charge of crypto tech

The SEC’s fresh approval of Nasdaq’s tokenized securities framework marks a key turning point for how stocks could trade in the future: it brings blockchain into the core of U.S. equity markets, but on Wall Street’s terms.

The regulatory green light allows Nasdaq to test a system where certain stocks and ETFs can be issued and settled as blockchain-based tokens while trading alongside traditional shares. In practice, investors could hold tokenized versions of securities in digital wallets, with clearing and settlement handled by the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC).

However, the effort isn't a sweeping overhaul of market operations; rather, it focuses on post-trade plumbing.

DTCC executive Brian Steele said the firm aims to build "safe, secure tokenization services to advance a more resilient, inclusive, cost-effective and efficient financial system," while working with exchanges and market participants to scale adoption.

Important announcements have been made regarding the eagerly awaited regulatory changes in the cryptocurrency market. Ron Hammond, Head of Policy and Advocacy at Wintermute, assessed the latest developments on critical topics such as the Clarity Act, the banks’ stablecoin interest rate dilemma, and the anti-CBDC bill.

The clock is tightening for the Clarity Act (Digital Asset Market Structure Act), one of the most important legal issues for the crypto industry in the US. In an interview with Tony Edward on the Thinking Crypto podcast, Ron Hammond, policy leader at Wintermute, stated that while the market sees a 65% chance of it passing, he is more cautious and keeps his estimate around 30%.

According to Hammond, the Senate Banking Committee aims to hold a markup vote on the bill in the second half of April.

However, the expert warned, “If this process drags on until after Memorial Day and the country enters an election period, the chances of the law passing this year will be seriously jeopardized.”

Hammond stated that banks are opposing platforms like Coinbase offering yields on stablecoins and are intensifying their lobbying efforts on this issue, adding that the White House has sent a message to the banks saying, “Current laws allow Coinbase this right; it is in your best interest to sit down and negotiate.”

It is stated that banks play an obstructive role not only in the matter of interest rates but also in decentralized finance (DeFi) regulation, and that this is one of the biggest obstacles to the Clarity Act.

Republicans are also reportedly trying to remove the anti-CBDC regulation from the defense spending package and include it in the housing bill. The bill reportedly includes a ban by 2030, but some Republicans are stalling the process by demanding a permanent ban.

HIVE Digital Technologies has announced that it will progressively wind down its Bitcoin mining operations at its Boden, Sweden facility, shifting focus toward artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and high-performance computing (HPC). The move comes amid tax disputes and security deposit demands from Swedish authorities, which made ASIC mining economically unviable in the region.
Swedish Facility to be Repurposed
The 7 MW data center in Boden will not be dismantled but upgraded to a Tier-III HPC standard, supporting enterprise-grade GPU clusters. The facility is being equipped with NVIDIA GB300 architectures for AI training and inference workloads, positioning HIVE to deliver advanced computing capabilities for AI applications.
Canadian HPC Expansion
Meanwhile, HIVE’s subsidiary BUZZ High Performance Computing is scaling operations across Canada through a strategic alliance with Bell Canada AI Fabric. HPC capacity will grow from 4 MW in Manitoba to 16.6 MW across two provinces:
A new colocation facility in British Columbia will contribute 5 MW immediately, with potential to expand by an additional 7.6 MW
The site will host roughly 2,000 next-generation GPUs, complementing the 2,000 GPUs already operational in Manitoba
Near-term deployment targets over 4,000 GPUs in Canada, with long-term plans exceeding 6,000 units
Financial Outlook
HIVE projects approximately $200 million in annualized revenue from its HPC business. Following the announcement, HIVE shares rose about 5.6% on Monday, despite a year-to-date decline of roughly 16.7%.
This strategic shift underscores HIVE’s transition from traditional Bitcoin mining toward AI and HPC, leveraging global computing infrastructure and enterprise-grade technology to drive future growth.
