Zcash (ZEC) is preparing to launch a quantum-recoverable wallet within the next month, marking a significant step toward protecting user assets from the potential threats posed by future quantum computers. The development, reported by CoinDesk, signals the privacy-focused blockchain’s broader ambition to transition its entire network to a post-quantum cryptographic system within the next 12 to 18 months.

Building a Bridge to a Post-Quantum Future

Josh Swihart, CEO of the Zcash development lab, outlined the company’s strategy during a recent interview. He explained that the upcoming wallet is designed to allow users to safely transfer and recover their funds in a scenario where quantum computers become powerful enough to break current cryptographic standards. This is not a response to an immediate threat but a proactive measure to ensure long-term asset security.

The initiative addresses a fundamental vulnerability shared by most blockchain networks: their reliance on elliptic curve cryptography, which quantum computers could theoretically solve. Zcash’s approach involves integrating quantum-resistant algorithms into its wallet infrastructure, creating a recovery mechanism that does not compromise the network’s existing privacy guarantees.

Privacy, Scaling, and the Zcash Vision

Swihart also positioned Zcash as a complement to Bitcoin, rather than a direct competitor. While Bitcoin functions primarily as a store of value, he noted, it has inherent limitations as a privacy-based peer-to-peer payment system. Zcash aims to fill that gap by offering shielded transactions that hide sender, receiver, and amount information by default.

The leading cryptocurrency, Bitcoin ($BTC), surged above $82,000 on news of a possible deal between the US and Iran, coupled with institutional support. However, new developments regarding the conflict in the Middle East pushed $BTC back below $80,000.

However, this recent downturn did not affect the options market, and it entered an upward trend.

Accordingly, options investors are targeting $115,000 for Bitcoin by the end of the year.

According to the data, the number of investors betting that Bitcoin will rise above $115,000 by the end of 2026 in the options market is steadily increasing.

The 33% price increase since the annual low of $60,130 on February 6th is playing a significant role in increasing bullish expectations.

It is estimated that there is approximately $6 billion in open positions in Bitcoin options that expire on December 25th.

A significant portion of this consists of call option bets on the Bitcoin price rising above $115,000. Open positions for $115,000 and above are approximately $1.85 billion.

However, at prices of $55,000 and below, there is a $1 billion put option, a figure that is also noteworthy.

This means that options traders are betting on extreme price expectations in both bullish and bearish markets. If the bulls appear overly optimistic, those taking short positions appear equally overly pessimistic.

Global markets are exhibiting mixed trends due to risks related to the Strait of Hormuz and tensions between the US and Iran, while attention is focused on the non-farm payroll data to be released in the US today.

The data, released on the first Friday of each month, is closely watched by investors and stakeholders to understand the state of the economy.

The price of Ondo has been trending higher alongside a wave of institutional developments tied to real-world asset (RWA) infrastructure.

The token currently trades at around $0.3664, marking a 5.7% gain in 24 hours, while maintaining a broader 7-day increase of about 37.5%.

Institutional settlement pilot strengthens $ONDO’s RWA narrative

Sentiment around $ONDO strengthened following a major announcement from Ondo Finance involving a cross-institutional pilot transaction that connected traditional banking infrastructure with blockchain-based settlement rails.

The pilot included Ondo Finance working alongside JPMorgan Chase, Mastercard, and Ripple.

The collaboration demonstrated how tokenised US Treasuries could move through a hybrid system combining public blockchain infrastructure and traditional financial rails.

In the transaction flow, Ondo processed a redemption of tokenised Treasury exposure (OUSG) on the $XRP Ledger.

The integration of the $XRP Ledger allows the tokenised asset to be issued and redeemed across XRPL, improving settlement speed and enabling broader institutional access to yield-bearing digital assets.

Mastercard’s Multi-Token Network then coordinated settlement instructions, which were routed through JPMorgan’s Kinexys infrastructure.

Final fiat settlement was delivered to Ripple’s Singapore banking account, completing the cross-border transfer.

This structure effectively linked three layers of finance in a single transaction: tokenised assets on a public blockchain, institutional messaging systems from Mastercard, and fiat settlement handled through JPMorgan’s banking network.

The result was a near real-time transfer of value outside traditional banking cut-off windows.

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde argued against the need for privately-issued euro-pegged stablecoins, even in the face of a market which is 98% dominated by dollar-pegged tokens.

Despite the rapid global adoption of USD stablecoins, Largarde argued Europe should focus on building tokenized settlement infrastructure anchored in central bank money rather than simply replicating the U.S. stablecoin model in a speech Bank of Spain’s LatAm Economic Forum in Madrid on Friday

"The case for promoting euro-denominated stablecoins is far weaker than it appears," Lagarde said, arguing that the technological case for stablecoins can be replicated by central bank infrastructure, while their monetary function introduces unacceptable risks to financial stability.

Those comments come as Qivalis, a consortium of 12 of Europe’s largest banks, including ING, BBVA, BNP Paribas, Danske Bank, and UniCredit, announced plans to launch a privately-issued digital euro, not a CBDC, later this year under the same premise that Europe faces dollarization risks.

“If we don’t have a euro onchain with depth of liquidity, then the only alternative is the U.S. dollar,” Qivalis CEO Jan-Oliver Sell told CoinDesk. “That’s a real risk to Europe’s financial and digital sovereignty.”

Lagarde reiterated warnings that stablecoins could create financial stability risks during periods of market stress. She referenced the March 2023 collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, when Circle disclosed that $3.3 billion of its $USDC reserves were at the bank, causing a brief de-peg of its stablecoin.
