Bitcoin Price Tops $77K as AI Agents Get Crypto Wallets

Bitcoin (BTC) price surged to $77,124.75 over the past 24h, leading a broad market rally driven by easing geopolitical tensions and news that Anthropic’s top-ranked AI model, Claude Opus 4.7, can now autonomously hold and trade BTC through Coinbase’s AgentKit.

The crypto market rallied on geopolitical de-escalation after Iran reopened the Strait of Hormuz on April 17, boosting risk sentiment and triggering a breakout.

Currencies & Foreign Exchange

The primary driver was Iran’s April 17 announcement that the Strait of Hormuz would be fully open to commercial traffic during a ceasefire.  This eased a major global energy chokepoint, causing oil prices to drop over 11% and reviving appetite for risk assets like Bitcoin.

The move was a macro-driven relief rally that reduced the war premium that had previously pressured crypto markets. Market direction is anticipated to be driven by further developments in US-Iran relations and their impact on oil prices, a key sentiment proxy.

Market update reports

The rally triggered a cascade of liquidations, with $379.74 million in BTC positions forced closed in 24 hours—a 216% spike from the prior period. Shorts accounted for over $344M of this total, indicating a violent squeeze that fueled the price surge.

Technically, Bitcoin broke out of a two-month range. The key upcoming trigger is whether the market can sustain the breakout. If price holds above the $75,000–$75,800 support zone, the next target is the 127.2% Fibonacci extension at $81,951. A break below $75,000 could see a retest of the $70,000 area.

According to an announcement from the official Solana X account on April 17, 2026, the highly anticipated integration is now fully live, injecting fresh cross-chain liquidity into the network's decentralized finance (DeFi) space.

The asset has been launched as a wrapped token, designated as wXRP.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading around $75,024, as the sector analyzes how to protect Satoshi Nakamoto’s 1.1 million $BTC. The volume of options and the bias of long-term “puts” already reflect a demand for protection against extreme systemic events.

The move comes as the ongoing Iran war continues to disrupt global supply chains, now entering its eighth week. For a country that imports most of its fuel, the pressure is real — and growing.
Energy Minister Chris Bowen confirmed that petrol sulphur limits will remain at 50 parts per million (ppm), five times higher than the usual 10 ppm standard. It’s not ideal from an environmental standpoint, but right now, ensuring fuel availability is taking priority.
At the same time, domestic challenges are adding to the strain. A recent fire at the Geelong Refinery — a key fuel production site — has reduced output. Diesel and jet fuel production are operating at about 80% capacity, while petrol sits at just 60%, limiting local supply when it’s needed most.
Despite these setbacks, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has reassured the public that fuel rationing is not on the table for now, aiming to prevent panic and maintain stability.
Behind the scenes, Australia is also working diplomatically to secure supply. A new agreement with Petronas — reached after visits to Singapore and Brunei — will help redirect surplus fuel to Australia, strengthening regional energy ties and easing immediate shortages.
