In a space where growth hacks and token incentives are everywhere, David Schwartz is drawing a clear line: adoption should be earned, not bought.
Recently, a community suggestion proposed offering discounted software subscriptions to institutions that choose to use XRP for transactions — essentially using financial perks to drive usage. On the surface, it sounds like a smart growth strategy.
But Schwartz disagrees.
He compared this idea to the early days of Uber, where aggressive subsidies helped scale the platform fast — but at a cost. The real concern? Users may not be there because they value the product, but simply because they’re being paid (directly or indirectly) to use it.
“If your growth depends on incentives that don’t make economic sense, it’s not real growth,” is the core message.
At Ripple, the focus has always been on reducing friction in cross-border payments — not artificially inflating demand. The idea is simple: if the product truly solves a problem, adoption will follow naturally.
That said, Ripple isn’t completely new to incentives. Its partnership with MoneyGram involved significant financial support, including a $50M investment and ongoing “market development fees.” But those incentives were tied to real usage and business alignment — not just to manufacture activity.
The bigger takeaway?
In crypto, there’s a fine line between accelerating adoption and faking it.
Short-term incentives might boost numbers.
But long-term value comes from real utility.
