Australian Pension Fund Hostplus Plots Crypto Play, Here’s What It Would Actually Mean For Bitcoin
An Australian pension fund is exploring offering Bitcoin and other digital assets to its members as investment options
In what Bloomberg fittingly calls a “rare move”, Hostplus, a A$150 billion+ ($105 billion) Australian pension fund, is considering this cryptocurrency venture due to the high demand from some members, said Chief Investment Officer Sam Sicilia in an interview:
There’s certainly a demand from some of our members who write in and say ‘why can’t I have access to cryptocurrency?’”

The fund is still in design phase, Sicilia clarified, and there are yet several capital matters to resolve, especially around safeguarding consumers. Besides, its implementation would depend entirely on regulatory approval. The CIO, however, is not worried about the wait and is ready to give regulators room the time they need:

“We’d love to get regulatory tick off, even if it means waiting another six months. We are long-term investors. Six months doesn’t really move the dial for us”

Were it to become a reality, the plan could come to fruition as soon as next financial year. Sicilia explained that the fund would add bitcoin and the other digital assets to its Choiceplus investment option, which lets members manage their own retirement portfolios. At present, only about 1% of the fund’s total assets sit in Choiceplus.

Hostplus first looked at cryptocurrencies a decade ago, and since then both Bitcoin and the broader crypto scene have change and evolved immensely. But the other digital assets the fund plans to incorporate are not just in the crypto asset class: music rights are included in those other digital assets, the Hostplus’ CIO added:

“With Vision Chain, we are introducing a public blockchain built with Europe’s regulatory framework at its core,” he stated. “Together with Optimism and the Vision Foundation, Bitpanda creates infrastructure that combines the reach of public blockchains with the standards institutions require. This is about building long-term foundations for Europe’s digital capital markets.”

Fabian Reinisch, President of the Vision Web3 Foundation Board, said that Vision Chain advances the foundation’s mission to develop sustainable onchain infrastructure.

The network provides a unified alternative to isolated private networks, enabling institutions to scale from experimentation to full production while tapping into the global blockchain ecosystem, as noted by the team.

Representatives from the digital asset industry reportedly met with the Senate Banking Committee on March 23 to review a White House-backed compromise—led by Sens. Tillis and Alsobrooks—on stablecoin rewards intended to revive the stalled CLARITY Act.

The ‘Passive vs. Active’ Yield Pivot

Representatives from the digital asset industry met with the U.S. Senate Banking Committee on Monday, March 23, for a closed-door review of an agreement between the White House and a bipartisan Senate duo—Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD)—regarding stablecoin rewards. The deal aims to unblock the CLARITY Act after months of legislative paralysis.

The primary friction point centered on the bill’s language regarding stablecoin interest. Traditional banking lobbyists have opposed provisions that would allow stablecoin issuers to offer high-yield products, fearing a massive deposit flight from commercial banks into digital dollar equivalents.

According to reports, the new compromise establishes a strict regulatory boundary. The accrual of yield on idle stablecoin balances—where a user earns money simply for holding the token—will likely be prohibited. On the other hand, rewards tied to specific utility, such as payments, transfers, or active platform engagement, will remain permitted.

To satisfy banking concerns, Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) was recently quoted stating that traditional banking terminology, including deposits and interest, would be scrubbed from the legislative text to ensure digital assets are not marketed as direct competitors to traditional savings accounts.

A Narrowing Legislative Window

While the yield agreement clears a major hurdle, the window for final passage is closing. The Senate Banking Committee is targeting a formal markup in the second

Conversely, failure to overcome the $2,180 resistance could trigger a pullback. Initial support is expected around $2,140, with more substantial support levels at $2,110 and $2,065. A break below $2,110 could lead to a decline towards the $2,010 region, with $2,000 acting as a major support. Technical indicators, including the hourly MACD and RSI, currently favor a bullish outlook.

If the timeline of the previous fractals continues to align, BTC will reach the final discount phase between October 6 and 16, 2026, with the buy zone around $41,500 and $45,000.

In the meantime, Bitcoin is in a “no-trader zone” between $65,636 and $70,685, and the next big move lies outside this range.
