The FAQ aligns the CFTC's capital charge framework with the SEC's recent broker-dealer haircut guidance, setting a 20% charge for bitcoin and ether and 2% for payment stablecoins. FCMs can deposit proprietary payment stablecoins as residual interest in customer accounts, but cannot deposit other crypto assets like bitcoin or ether for that purpose. Staff at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission on Friday published a set of frequently asked questions spelling out the operational details of how futures commission merchants and clearinghouses should handle crypto assets used as collateral in derivatives markets. Historically, the biggest gains in crypto have come from early entry. Buying Bitcoin when it was worth just a few cents, or participating in Ethereum’s 2014 token sale at around $0.30, created some of the earliest and largest fortunes in the space.
But in today’s market, early access looks very different.
Instead of a handful of projects, there are now thousands of new tokens launching every month. That makes the real challenge not just getting in early—but figuring out which projects are actually worth the risk.
Regulation is shaping the backdrop
Recent regulatory developments are helping bring more clarity to the market.
In a joint move, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) identified a group of major cryptocurrencies—including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Dogecoin, and Shiba Inu—as digital commodities.
This kind of classification reduces long-standing uncertainty and gives investors a clearer framework, especially when evaluating early-stage opportunities.
At the same time, the broader market remains relatively steady. Bitcoin is holding around the $70,000 level, suggesting that while sentiment is positive, macro factors like interest rates and oil prices are still limiting short-term upside.
The renewed interest in presales
With clearer regulation and a more mature market, presales are once again drawing attention.
In theory, buying into a project before exchange listings can offer higher upside. But it also comes with significantly higher risk—many presale projects never deliver a working product or sustainable ecosystem.

For Ethereum's massive TVL, Gaevoy claimed that most of the capital on the chain is "stuck money" and "corporate experiments" on blockchain rails.

People quite overestimate those corporate pilots to put some cash markets and bonds on the block. It's a tiny TradFi economic activity.

On the contrary, for Solana, the memecoin mania has revealed that its technology works and it can handle massive transaction volumes with faster transfers.
