Bitcoin may be entering a phase of selling pressure. After hitting a low near $60,000 on February 5th, the price of Bitcoin consolidated for over two months, slowly climbing to around the $70,000 mark. Meanwhile, the Middle East conflict has driven oil prices well above $100 per barrel, creating significant uncertainty in the macroeconomic situation.

Data from CheckonChain suggests that selling pressure is beginning to ease. Realized daily losses are currently around $400 million, still higher than previous years, but trending downwards in recent weeks.

Data shows that actual losses surged to $2 billion on November 21st and February 5th, reaching levels unseen in years and exceeding those during the 2022 bear market.

CheckonChain stated, "The spot market is shifting from aggressive selling to net buying pressure, with both realized profits and losses declining."

Data from Glassnode also corroborates this trend. Based on a seven-day moving average, daily realized profits are around $300 million, near a twelve-month low. This indicates that investors who bought Bitcoin at $60,000 are now slightly profitable and beginning to take profits.

Core CPI came in at 2.6%, missing the estimates that the market had been bracing for. Bitcoin read the miss immediately. The price broke $73,000 on the print as the derivatives market processed the signal: energy-driven headline inflation with contained core means the Fed's rate cut path has not been closed by the March data. Bitcoin.com confirmed weekly gains hit 9% as BTC charged past $73,332, its highest since March 18.

The CPI miss is the macro confirmation the recovery needed after the ceasefire catalyst gave Bitcoin its initial three-week high. Two separate events pointing at the same destination in the same week is the structural signal that separates Q2's opening from every contested session Q1 produced.
The CPI Miss and What It Means for the Bitcoin Recovery Thesis

The distinction between headline CPI and core CPI is the one that markets price rate cut timing around. Headline at 3.3% includes the 60-year record gas price spike that energy markets produced in March. Core at 2.6% excludes energy and food, the components the Fed can actually influence through rate policy. The miss on core at 2.6% confirms the inflation the Fed is responsible for is contained while the headline spike is an energy market event.

Bitcoin above $73K on that distinction means the derivatives market is pricing rate cut optionality as alive rather than closed. The $75K test that analysts identified as the structural confirmation level is now the next question. Above $75K on a sustained close converts the recovery from a two-catalyst bounce into a confirmed Q2 trajectory toward the Standard Chartered and Bernstein $150K year-end targets.

The European Central Bank (ECB) has reportedly endorsed the European Union’s (EU) plan to shift oversight of key financial markets, including crypto, from national authorities to a centralized supervisory authority.

ECB Greenlights Crypto Oversight Centralization
On Friday, the European Central Bank backed the EU’s proposal to integrate the bloc’s capital market through a centralized entity, seeking to boost the region’s competitiveness and harmonize regulation, Reuters reported.

The financial regulator expressed its full support for enhanced EU-level oversight of systemically important, cross-border financial market participants, including major trading platforms, central counterparties, central securities depositories, and crypto asset service providers (CASPs).

“The ECB fully supports the ‌Commission ⁠proposals, which constitute an ambitious step towards deeper integration of capital markets and financial market supervision within the Union,” it said in an opinion. It’s worth noting that the opinion is required by the Commission’s legislative process, but is not binding for lawmakers.

The plan, led by France and Germany, was initially suggested during the development of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). It proposes transferring the power to authorize new businesses and supervise all crypto asset service providers to the bloc’s market watchdog, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA).

In October, ESMA’s Chair, Verena Ross, disclosed that the EU’s executive branch was in the process of formulating regulations to grant enhanced authority to the regional regulatory authority and push for a “more integrated and globally competitive” capital market within Europe.

She argued that nation-level regulation takes significant effort to build up specific new resources and expertise 27 times in different national supervisors, which “could have been done more efficiently once at a European level.”

As the war with Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz send oil prices higher, inflation is once again at the forefront of investors' minds.

In the U.S., inflation accelerated last month to 0.9%, driven mostly by energy costs linked to the Middle East conflict; core inflation, which excludes energy and food costs, surprisingly fell short of estimates. February's headline increase was just 0.3%.

For Michael Ashton, co-founder of the USDi stablecoin along with Andrew Fately, the figures underscore a flaw in crypto’s monetary architecture.

“The stablecoin boom has accidentally rebuilt only half of the monetary system,” Ashton told CoinDesk in an interview. “Stablecoins solved the medium-of-exchange problem for crypto, but nobody solved the store-of-value problem. USDi is the first serious attempt to finish building the monetary system onchain."

The $300 billion stablecoin market, dominated by dollar-pegged tokens, has become essential plumbing for crypto trading and payments. But those tokens, typically backed by cash or Treasury bills, are designed to hold a nominal value of $1, not preserve purchasing power. In real terms, Ashton argues, they are losing value.

“As stablecoins graduate from crypto-trading tools to genuine payment infrastructure, the store-of-value gap becomes a real institutional concern, not just a philosophical one," he said. "Treasurers, neobanks, and cross-border payment platforms holding float in stablecoins are quietly taking inflation risk they probably haven't priced."

USDi

USDi is an attempt to fill that gap.

Instead of tracking the dollar, the token is designed to track inflation itself. Its value increases in line with changes in the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI), effectively making it a blockchain-native version of an inflation-protected principal.
