Canada’s financial intelligence agency delivered its most sweeping single-day enforcement action against the cryptocurrency sector on Tuesday, revoking the registrations of 23 money services businesses (MSBs) offering crypto-related services in one coordinated move. The action by the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre (FINTRAC) represents a significant escalation in Ottawa’s campaign to bring virtual currency operators into line with the country’s anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing framework. All 23 of the affected businesses are registered as MSBs under Canada’s Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act (PCMLTFA), and all offer cryptocurrency-related services.
