Hong Kong Grants First Stablecoin Licenses to HSBC, Anchorpoint

Anchorpoint Financial is a joint venture formed by Standard Chartered Bank Hong Kong, Animoca Brands, and Hong Kong Telecommunications Hong Kong's Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued its first stablecoin licenses on Friday, approving Anchorpoint Financial and the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation under the city's new regulatory framework for fiat-referenced stablecoin issuers. The announcement marks the first approvals since the regime took effect on Aug. 1, 2025.

Anchorpoint Financial is a joint venture formed by Standard Chartered Bank Hong Kong, Animoca Brands, and Hong Kong Telecommunications. The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, HSBC's Hong Kong-based banking entity, is also one of the city's three note-issuing banks. Both entities now appear on the HKMA's public register of licensed stablecoin issuers.

The Federal Reserve is asking major US banks how exposed they are to the private credit market. The Treasury is asking insurance companies the same question. Neither has announced a formal investigation. They are doing it through routine examination channels, which is what regulators often do when they are worried but do not yet know how worried to be.

The $1.8 trillion private credit market is facing its most significant stress since it emerged after the 2008 financial crisis. Understanding why requires a brief look at how it was built.

What Private Credit Is and Why It’s Cracking
Private credit funds lend directly to mid-market companies – typically businesses too small for public bond markets. Between 2019 and 2021, when interest rates were near zero, these funds wrote loans aggressively, particularly in software and technology. The problem is loans written during that period are now coming due. That puts the refinancing wall squarely in 2025 and 2026, when rates are dramatically higher.

Companies that borrowed at effectively zero must now refinance at 5-6% more, or default. Many are choosing a third option: Payment-in-Kind interest, or PIK, where instead of paying cash interest, they simply add it to the principal.

According to reports citing Fitch and KBRA ratings data, bad PIK reached 6.4% of total private debt volume in Q1 2026 – a recognised precursor to hard defaults.

Microsoft’s Defender Security Research Team went public last week with details of a vulnerability it first caught in April 2025. The flaw lived inside a widely used software component called the EngageLab SDK, version 4.5.4.

Because that SDK is baked into thousands of Android apps, a single malicious app could trigger a chain reaction that reached far beyond itself.

How The Attack Works
The method is called “intent redirection.” An attacker’s app sends a specially crafted message to any app running the flawed SDK version. Once that message lands, the targeted app is tricked into handing over read and write access to its own data — including stored seed phrases and wallet addresses.

Android’s built-in sandbox system, which normally keeps apps from seeing each other’s data, was bypassed entirely. According to Microsoft, the attack affected more than 50 million apps across the Android ecosystem, with roughly 30 million of those being crypto wallets.

The vulnerability did not require the user to do anything wrong. No suspicious links. No phishing pages. Just having the wrong apps installed at the same time was enough.

Response From Microsoft And Google
Microsoft moved quickly after its discovery. By May 2025, the company had brought Google and the Android Security Team into the response. EngageLab released a fixed version — SDK 5.2.1 — shortly after.

Reports indicate that both Microsoft and Google have since directed users on how to verify whether their wallet apps have been updated through Google Play Protect.
