Bitcoin just did something it hasn’t managed in months: it broke free.

After spending nearly three months pinned between $65K and $75K, $BTC surged past $79K on Wednesday, riding a wave of geopolitical relief after President Trump extended the US ceasefire with Iran just hours before the two-week deal was set to expire. The timing was, as they say, not subtle.

What happened

The ceasefire extension removed what traders had been pricing in as an imminent risk. An expiring deal with Iran, left to lapse, would have injected fresh uncertainty into energy markets and the broader risk landscape. Instead, the renewal acted like a release valve.

Bitcoin climbed 4.3% in 24 hours and 6.6% over the past week, pushing to levels not seen since early February. Ethereum followed closely, gaining 4.2% to reach $2,400. Solana rose 3.1% to $89, and $XRP held steady near $1.45.

Traditional markets moved in lockstep. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq both posted gains Wednesday morning, confirming this wasn’t a crypto-specific phenomenon. Risk assets across the board got the green light.

Here’s the thing: Bitcoin had been stuck in that $65K-$75K range since early February. That’s roughly 10 weeks of sideways price action, the kind of extended consolidation that tends to resolve violently in one direction or the other. This time, it resolved upward.

Marking the first anniversary of his chairmanship at the Washington Economic Club, SEC Chairman Paul Atkins used a keynote address to announce what he cast as a regulatory reset for digital assets built around an "A-C-T" strategy: advance, clarify, transform. At the center of that agenda is a five-category token framework that, according to Atkins, will place only a narrow slice of crypto assets inside securities law while explicitly classifying most others as non-securities. SEC pivots from enforcement to classification "Our goal is to help market participants slot crypto assets into clear categories, instead of leaving them to guess whether the SEC will call something a security after the fact," Atkins said in earlier remarks outlining the same framework. He reiterated his oft-stated principle that "form does not change substance," arguing that a stock "remains a stock, whether represented on paper, through a DTCC entry, or as a blockchain token," while also stressing that not every token used in a capital raise should be treated as a security forever. Innovation exemption and Project Crypto The headline reform is an "innovation exemption" designed to let qualified firms issue and trade tokenized securities on-chain for a limited period under lighter-touch conditions, while still operating under SEC oversight.

Will Russia Accept XRP Under New Cross-Border Crypto Settlement Bill?

Russia passed first reading of a crypto bill allowing foreign trade settlements and central bank approval of eligible assets.
Russia’s State Duma has moved a new crypto bill forward, raising questions about whether XRP could be used under a regulated cross-border settlement system. The draft law, titled “On Digital Currency and Digital Rights,” passed its first reading with 327 of 340 deputies voting in favor, according to the details provided. The bill would create a legal structure for licensed crypto trading and custody while keeping domestic crypto payments banned.
The proposal would allow digital currencies for foreign trade settlements, which places assets such as XRP back into focus because of their existing role in cross-border payment discussions. At this stage, the bill does not name XRP directly. Still, only large and liquid digital assets with a long operating history may qualify for organized trading if approved by the Bank of Russia.

Another reason why XRP may qualify is the SEC and CFTC joint classification of XRP as a digital commodity in March 2026. In addition, the markets are watching the CLARITY Act in the United States, which could further define how digital assets such as XRP are treated under federal law if passed.
