Bittensor Subnet Tokens Surge as TAO Rally Boosts Ecosystem



Decentralized artificial intelligence (AI) protocol Bittensor's native $TAO token has rallied roughly 90% over the past month from around $180 at the start of March to above $332 as of March 24, and the momentum is spilling over into its subnet token ecosystem.

According to CoinGecko data, the Bittensor Subnets category is up 30% over the past 24 hours to a combined market capitalization of $1.47 billion, with trading volume topping $118 million. Of the subnet tokens tracked on the platform, a significant number have posted triple-digit percentage gains over the past month.


What Are Subnets?

Subnets are specialized mini-networks within the Bittensor ecosystem, each dedicated to a specific AI task, ranging from language model training and decentralized compute to sports prediction and cybersecurity. Miners within each subnet compete to produce high-quality AI outputs, while validators evaluate performance and allocate $TAO rewards accordingly.

Since the launch of dynamic $TAO (dTAO) in February 2025, each subnet operates as its own automated market maker with a natively assigned token. The valuation of each subnet token is determined by the amount of $TAO staked into that subnet's reserves, creating a direct economic link between $TAO's price and subnet token performance. The subnet ecosystem first crossed $500 million in April 2025, and by July 2025, the cumulative subnet market cap had neared $1 billion as $TAO treasury companies like xTAO and Synaptogenix emerged.

The relationship is reflexive: as $TAO appreciates, each subnet's $TAO reserve becomes more valuable, inflating subnet token prices, which, in turn, attract more stakers and attention to the ecosystem.

Bitcoin recently found support at a key onchain metric the average realized price for a specific year in this case the 2023 cost basis.

The 2023 average realized price currently sits around $63,700. During the local bottom in early February, when bitcoin dropped roughly 50% from its October all-time high, to roughly $60,000, price effectively tested and held this level as support.

This behavior mirrors the previous cycle. In early 2023, as the bull run began, bitcoin experienced several small corrections and repeatedly used the 2023 realized price as support. This can be observed in March, July, and September 2023, when price consolidated in the $20,000 to $26,000 range.

Looking at newer cohorts, the 2026 average realized price started the year near $90,000 and has since declined to around $77,000. With bitcoin currently trading just above $70,000, the average 2026 buyer is underwater. Notably, this cohort's cost basis has also fallen below both the 2024 cohort at $81,500 and the 2025 cohort at $96,400.

Zooming out further, the aggregate realized price, which represents the average cost basis of all coins in circulation, is currently around $54,360. Historically, bitcoin has traded below this level in every major bear market, including 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2022.

On the 20th of March, the SEC quietly sent two important proposals to the White House. One focuses on making hedge funds and private equity firms more transparent.

Meanwhile, the second proposal was a more significant one for crypto. The latter aims to create a clear system to classify digital assets.

If approved, many cryptocurrencies may no longer be classified as securities, reducing confusion and giving the industry clearer rules to follow. Instead of relying on lawsuits, the SEC is shifting toward setting clear guidelines, as reported by Bloomberg.

The proposed “innovation exemption” highlights this change. Rather than strict enforcement, the SEC is offering a more supportive environment where crypto firms can operate with fewer restrictions. This means new companies may not need to immediately meet complex registration requirements, making it easier for them to build and grow in the U.S.

Remarking on the same, Michael S. Selig, Chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), said,

Citing the reason behind this shift, Selig explains that earlier, the SEC, under Chair Gary Gensler, companies were often left guessing what was allowed and what wasn’t. This confusion pushed many crypto businesses to move outside the U.S.
