Super Micro Computer Co-Founder Arrested in Alleged $2.5B AI Chip Smuggling Case
Federal prosecutors have unsealed an indictment charging the co-founder of Super Micro Computer and two associates with conspiring to illegally divert approximately $2.5 billion worth of AI servers equipped with Nvidia chips to China, in violation of U.S. export control laws. The arrests mark the most high-profile enforcement action tied to restricted AI technology exports to date.

Three Charged in Federal Court

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced the charges on Thursday. Yih-Shyan “Wally” Liaw, a 71-year-old U.S. citizen who co-founded Super Micro, was arrested in California and released on bail. 

Ting-Wei “Willy” Sun, a Taiwan national who worked as a contractor, was also taken into custody and is awaiting a detention hearing. A third defendant, Ruei-Tsang “Steven” Chang, who served as the company’s Taiwan general manager, remains a fugitive.

All three face charges of conspiring to violate the Export Controls Reform Act, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, as well as additional counts of conspiracy to smuggle goods and to defraud the United States. “Crimes involving sensitive technology must be met with swift action; the law is meaningless,” said Jay Clayton, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

How the Alleged Scheme Worked

According to the indictment, the operation ran throughout 2024 and 2025. Liaw and Chang allegedly directed executives at an unnamed Southeast Asian company to place purchase orders with Super Micro as though the servers were destined for that region. The servers, packed with Nvidia’s B200 and H200 GPUs, were then reportedly repackaged and forwarded to end users in China.

Cardano is entering a critical phase in its upgrade roadmap as it prepares for the launch of Protocol version 11, dubbed the van Rossem hard fork.

At the center of this transition is the anticipated release of Cardano Node 10.7.0, a critical software upgrade that will enable ecosystem-wide readiness and testing before deployment to mainnet.

Cardano Nears Key Upgrade

According to an announcement from Intersect, Cardano is approaching a major upgrade milestone, with the Node 10.7.0 pre-release expected within days. This release represents one of two critical node versions required to activate Version 11, known as the van Rossem hard fork.

Previously, Node 10.6.2 initiated upgrade preparations in February. Node 10.7.0 will advance the process and move the network closer to activation.

Beyond basic hard fork readiness, Node 10.7.0 introduces new features and improvements that require ecosystem-wide integration and testing. Developers, infrastructure providers, and stake pool operators will all play a role in this phase. Meanwhile, Intersect hinted at plans to roll out additional minor updates depending on performance outcomes.

Analysts say the token remains under pressure unless it can reclaim that level.

Throughout 2025, XRP traded within a wide parallel channel, with resistance near $3.45 and support around $1.80.

The token stayed inside that range even after reaching an all-time high of $3.60 in July 2025, though price action weakened with lower highs forming.

That structure broke in February 2026 when XRP closed below $1.80 for the first time.

Since then, the same level has acted as a ceiling. Each attempt to move higher has been rejected below that zone.

AltCryptoGems analyst Sjuul highlighted that the pattern of lower highs and lower lows remains intact on the daily chart, continuing to define XRP’s direction.
