Gold climbed above $4,550 per ounce on Wednesday, marking a modest recovery from a sharp March sell-off as reports of US efforts to end the Iran war eased investor concerns.

At the same time, oil prices dropped sharply on the news, with West Texas Intermediate falling to $86.72 per barrel.

Gold ETF Demand Remains Strong Despite March Turbulence

Gold came under heavy selling pressure in recent weeks as geopolitical tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran intensified. Since early March, the precious metal has declined by more than 13.6%, significantly underperforming Bitcoin (BTC) over the same period.

Investor outflows have further highlighted the short-term weakness. According to a report by BeInCrypto, the SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) recorded its biggest single-day outflow since 2016 on March 4, with approximately $2.91 billion withdrawn in a single session.

Despite the recent downturn, the broader outlook for gold-backed investment vehicles remains constructive.

Data shared by The Kobeissi Letter shows that assets under management (AUM) in GLD have climbed to around $181 billion, placing it near record highs.

Notably, the ETF’s AUM has doubled in less than a year, highlighting sustained investor interest in gold exposure over the longer term. BeInCrypto recently highlighted that since Q2 2025, retail investors have bought over $70 billion in gold ETFs.

Over an eight-year horizon, the value of assets held within the fund has surged by more than 500%.

Market analysis suggests it is becoming increasingly likely that $XRP needs to drop below the $1 area before it can gather strength to flip the bearish trend.

$XRP has faced bearish pressure alongside the rest of the crypto market over the past few months. This ongoing downturn, which picked up pace in Q4 2025, has led to a 50% decline in $XRP’s price, trading for $1.41 at the time of this press.

However, despite the deep correction, market data suggests $XRP still has more room to drop further before it can comfortably turn the bearish situation around. Specifically, $XRP currently trades within a Wave 2 phase, with the imminent Wave 3 potentially pushing prices to the $0.87 to $1.09 range.

This is according to an analysis from Casi, a prominent market commentator, as she shares an update to her long-standing market exposition. According to Casi, she is still tracking $XRP’s current Wave 2 structure, which split into an ABC sub-structure that has dictated the crypto asset’s price action in recent days.

Looking at the 1-hour chart shared by Casi, data shows $XRP completed a corrective Wave 1 when it dropped from the March 17 peak of $1.60 to a floor price of $1.36 by March 23.

Gold’s longest losing streak in a century meets bitcoin’s resurgence

Gold is currently on its longest losing streak in over a century, its worst run since February 1920, lasting 10 consecutive days, according to Katie Greifeld, Bloomberg analyst.

The yellow metal has fallen as much as 27% from its January all time high, dropping to a low of $4,090, where it found support at its 200 day moving average, a widely watched technical level that often signals longer term trend strength.

However, it has rebounded by around 2% over the past 24 hours, likely signaling the end of the streak. Since the escalation of the Middle East conflict at the end of February, gold remains down roughly 12%.

Meanwhile, bitcoin, often referred to as digital gold, is holding above $70,000, keeping the bitcoin to gold ratio just below 16 ounces. The ratio bottomed at around 12 ounces just before the Middle East conflict, meaning the ratio has risen roughly 30% from those lows, with bitcoin outperforming.

Charlie Morris, chief investment officer at ByteTree, noted: “I remember the excitement when 1 $BTC first surpassed one ounce of gold in March 2017. Since then, it has consistently built higher lows, reaching 2.7 oz in 2019, 3.4 oz during the 2020 pandemic crash, 9.1 oz after the FTX collapse, and 12.4 oz in February this year. Now, one $BTC is worth 16 ounces of gold. With gold appearing exhausted, we could reasonably expect a new all time high above 40 ounces in the coming months or years.”

Historically, bitcoin has tended to lag gold in market cycles. Gold typically leads with an initial rally, then consolidates, allowing bitcoin to catch up and outperform.

While, Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas argues that bitcoin and gold are not inversely correlated, but rather largely uncorrelated.
