Beyond ‘digital gold,’ Iran conflict forces a rethink of the nature of bitcoin

Bitcoin's outperformance during the Iran conflict doesn't fit the standard playbook, and Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan thinks he knows why.

The largest cryptocurrency has gained 12% since U.S. and Israeli airstrikes began Feb. 28, while the S&P 500 has fallen 1% and gold 10%. For an asset routinely dismissed as a leveraged tech bet during risk-off episodes, that performance has forced a rethink.

In a post on X, Hougan reframed bitcoin as two simultaneous bets. The first is the familiar "digital gold" thesis, competing for share of the $38 trillion store-of-value market.

The second is what he calls an out-of-the-money call option on bitcoin functioning as an actual currency, a bet he says most investors have treated as borderline irrelevant until now.

The Iran conflict changed the math on the second bet. Iran said it will collect a $1-per-barrel toll in bitcoin from ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the equivalent of roughly $20 million per day.

The levy is one of the first real-world examples of a sovereign state using bitcoin as a settlement mechanism for physical commerce, even if the circumstances were far from ideal.

TAO Crypto Price Crash: Governance Exit Dump and Three Recovery Scenarios



Bittensor ($TAO) dropped nearly 25% after Covenant AI made an exit, accusing co-founder Jacob Steeves of having too much control over governance. Analyst Michaël van de Poppe explained that the real damage came when Covenant’s founder dumped 37K $TAO, triggering panic selling and liquidations.

That triggered a deeper chain reaction:

Validators lost stake = consensus power dropped

Rewards declined = incentives weakened

Confidence slipped = more users exited

All of this created a classic negative spiral, with trust taking a direct hit.

Despite the chaos, the team responded with updates like Teutonic-I and a new proposal (BIT-0011) aimed at preventing similar sell-offs in the future.

However, the analyst sees this as a major stress test and breaks the crash down into three possible scenarios.

Scenario 1: Fast Recovery Back to $300–$340

The first path is a strong bounce. If the market stabilizes and governance fixes like BIT-0011 get approved, this entire event could pass quickly.

Analyst sees confidence could return fast, especially as Bittensor remains a vital player in the AI + crypto narrative. He gives this scenario a 45% chance, rising to 60% if proposals are implemented.

Scenario 2: Slow Grind Between $200–$260

If uncertainty lingers, $TAO may move sideways. Buyers may not be strong enough to absorb continued outflows, and rebuilding trust could take time.

This scenario carries about a 40% probability.

Scenario 3: Deeper Drop Toward $180

The worst-case path depends on things getting worse from here. If more subnets exit, outflows accelerate, and governance improvements fail, $TAO could see another leg down.

But the analyst finds this unlikely, assigning just a 10–15% probability unless a broader domino effect kicks in.

Crypto exchanges have become the primary venues where millions of people and businesses store and transfer digital money. According to industry data, the crypto market is currently seeing roughly $190–$192 billion in 24-hour trading volume. As exchanges expand into multi-asset venues, the security mechanism evolves beyond wallets into identity, permissions, pricing and settlement. Yet, despite growing pressure from regulators, their security is still failing.

In 2025, more than $3 billion in crypto assets were stolen, according to industry estimates. Moreover, several single incidents caused losses of over $1 billion each. Were these small or underfunded platforms? No.

The largest hacks happened at major global exchanges with ample capital and technology. So, a lack of resources allocated for protection wasn’t the issue — security, still treated as marketing, was.

Much of the industry keeps treating security as a performance rather than an operating discipline. Exchanges invest in what appears convincing on the surface: dashboards, reserve snapshots, protection funds, public statements. It looks reassuring, but it doesn't prove how risk is managed day to day.

That’s why, unless security is designed to be enforced, not shown off, even the biggest platforms will stay fragile. And when stress hits, that fragility spills over to users immediately.

Performative Security is Dangerous

In fact, what’s happening is what I call “security theater.” It’s when an exchange focuses on looking safe, but not actually being safe. So the focus shifts to optics, such as headlines and polished statements, while the real governance remains weak.

I’ve seen how such a mindset takes hold. When a business is growing, it has to move fast and keep everything smooth for users. In such conditions, security controls are a friction. They slow

Warsh's list of crypto holdings has surfaced with the release of a 69-page government ethics document.


Federal Reserve Chair nominee Kevin Warsh submitted his financial disclosure document to the Office of Government Ethics (OGE) on April 14, the final procedural hurdle before the Senate confirmation hearing.  The documents show that Warsh and his wife Jane Lauder's combined assets are approximately $192 million, possibly higher. However, what truly captured the crypto industry's attention were the more than twenty crypto and Web3-related holdings hidden deep within the documents.


Warsh had previously stated in a public interview with the Hoover Institution that Bitcoin did not bother him, and that he considered it an important asset that could help policymakers determine the correctness of their decisions. Now, the disclosed documents prove that he didn't just talk the talk—his money is indeed invested in this sector.
