The crypto sector's new Fellowship political action committee disclosed its first contribution ahead of the 2026 congressional midterm elections, and the $300,000 it spent went to a company co-founded by President Donald Trump's former crypto adviser, Bo Hines — now chief executive of Tether US.

The Fellowship super PAC had advertised itself as a crypto campaign-finance juggernaut last year but hadn't yet participated in the U.S. midterm elections until a new federal disclosure indicated it's signed its first check. From the time the PAC was announced, the effort was reportedly tied to Tether, though the company declined to confirm the connection. On April 1, the PAC named Tether US executive Jesse Spiro as its chairman.

Days later, Fellowship quietly made its first expense filing to the Federal Election Commission, reporting that it bought advertising for Georgia Republican Clay Fuller through Nxum Group — a firm co-founded by Hines, father Todd Hines and a third partner. The PAC, which says it's "rooted in transparency," hasn't responded to CoinDesk questions about its formation and funding, nor about the payment that may benefit the Tether US CEO and his relative.

Setting up a super PAC and paying yourself for services isn't against U.S. campaign-finance rules, as long as the service is provided at appropriate market value, said Michael Beckel at political reform organization Issue One.

"There is no blanket prohibition on self-dealing when we're talking about political committees like this," he said in an interview. "The general rule is that services need to be rendered that are bonafide services — actual services — and those rates that are paid have to be fair-market rates."

If there’s one positive takeaway from recent market FUD, it’s that it continues to strengthen crypto’s role as a macro hedge.
During the Q2 2025 cycle, “liberation FUD” triggered a clear risk-off sentiment across the crypto market, as investors repositioned amid tighter global monetary expectations driven by U.S. tariff policies. As a result, capital rotated out of risk assets.
One clear signal of this shift was the XAU/BTC ratio, which closed the cycle up around 76%. This showed a strong rotation into gold compared to Bitcoin, as investors looked for more stable hedges during uncertainty.
This time, however, the reaction has been slightly different. Even with renewed geopolitical tension in the Middle East adding pressure to global markets, Bitcoin inflows have remained relatively resilient, suggesting stronger underlying demand than in previous cycles.
A key factor behind this shift may be Japan’s updated crypto regulatory framework. Japan has officially revised its Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, classifying crypto assets as financial instruments under a more structured legal umbrella. According to Nikkei, this move strengthens oversight while also providing clearer recognition of crypto within the traditional financial system.
In simple terms, this change helps move crypto away from the “pure speculation” narrative and positions it closer to a regulated asset class, similar in perception to traditional financial instruments.
What makes this even more important is timing. As Japan faces renewed economic pressure, this regulatory clarity could be a strategic step toward attracting institutional participation and improving market stability. If other jurisdictions follow a similar path, it could gradually reduce uncertainty and strengthen long-term capital inflows into Bitcoin and the broader crypto market.

Elsewhere, market behavior reinforces this cautiously optimistic view. The S&P 500, which at one point was down about 9%, has recovered to a drawdown closer to 1%.

Credit spreads remain contained, suggesting that systemic stress is limited. Even in traditionally defensive assets, the signals are nuanced. Gold and bonds, which are typically less correlated, have been moving together more closely, a dynamic Timmer attributes in part to global capital flows.

Countries facing constraints in moving energy through the Strait of Hormuz, he notes, may be raising liquidity by selling highly liquid assets such as gold and U.S. Treasuries, creating unusual correlations.

North Korea's six-month infiltration campaign at Drift rattled a crypto industry already reeling from billion-dollar exploits.

But as the news settled, a bigger question came into focus: why does North Korea keep coming back to crypto in the first place, and why does its approach look so different from every other state-backed hacking operation on the planet?

The short answer, according to security experts, is that crypto helps give the regime a revenue stream and keep them afloat.

"North Korea doesn't have the luxury of patience," said Dave Schwed, chief operating officer at SVRN and the founder of the cybersecurity masters program at Yeshiva University. "They're under comprehensive international sanctions and they need hard currency to fund weapons programs. The UN and multiple intelligence agencies have confirmed that crypto theft is a primary funding mechanism for their nuclear and ballistic missile development."

That urgency explains a dynamic that has long puzzled investigators: why North Korean hackers carry out large-scale, traceable heists on public blockchains instead of quietly using crypto to evade sanctions the way other state actors do.

The answer, Schwed argues, is structural. Russia still has an economy: oil, gas, commodity exports, and trading partners willing to use workarounds. It needs crypto as a payment rail, but not for much else. Iran, too, has goods to move — sanctioned oil, proxy financing networks, willing intermediaries across the Middle East. North Korea has almost nothing left to sell.

"Their exports are almost entirely sanctioned. They don't have a functioning economy that needs a payment rail.
