Crypto's massive exploit may force big banks to rethink their blockchain plans, Jefferies warns
A major decentralized finance (DeFi) hack could prompt Wall Street firms to reassess the pace of their blockchain and tokenization efforts, a Jefferies analyst wrote in a report.

The note follows a $293 million exploit of Kelp DAO on April 18, in which attackers minted unbacked tokens and used them as collateral to borrow other assets across lending platforms.

The incident, potentially linked to North Korea’s Lazarus Group, has already rippled through crypto markets, triggering sharp token sell-offs and a liquidity crunch in key protocols.
Jefferies analyst Andrew Moss said the fallout may extend beyond crypto-native firms to traditional financial institutions, which have been accelerating efforts to tokenize assets such as funds, bonds and deposits.

They overwhelmed valid RPC nodes and introduced malicious ones, forcing the system to rely on manipulated data inputs. According to LayerZero, the attack worked because KelpDAO used a single DVN, which removed any backup verification layer.

Once the system trusted the false message, it released about 116,500 rsETH, worth nearly $294 million, without backing. The process completed within minutes, underscoring how quickly such failures can escalate. This implies cross-chain systems face structural risk, where weak validation design can trigger rapid losses and weaken market confidence.

MIT Digital Currency Initiative director Neha Narula has laid out a proposed roadmap for making Bitcoin resilient to a future cryptographically relevant quantum computer, arguing the network should prioritize a practical, low-risk path that lets users secure their coins now rather than waiting for consensus on harder questions such as how to handle unmoved coins.

In a post published April 20, Narula said Bitcoin does not need “100% of the answers immediately” before taking meaningful action. Instead, she argued for a staged approach: deploy a post-quantum-safe output type and signature scheme through a soft fork, coordinate wallet and application support around it, and push users toward migration well before any true quantum emergency arrives.

Bitcoin Needs Low-Risk Quantum Defenses Now
Her core thesis is straightforward. “We should make the low-harm, low-risk, high-benefit, safety-critical mitigations NOW, and save the high-harm, high-risk mitigations for LATER, when we know with more certainty a CRQC is close,” she wrote, using CRQC to refer to a cryptographically relevant quantum computer.

The proposal Narula favors centers on P2MR, described in BIP 360, combined with a new post-quantum signature opcode and cryptographic agility. In her framing, that combination would allow Bitcoin users to move funds into an output type that remains safe against a quantum attacker, provided they do not reveal a non-post-quantum public key through address reuse or similar behavior.

“If this is done, it gives Bitcoin users the ability to move their coins to a safe output type immediately, having confidence their coins are safe even if a powerful CRQC appears, without worrying about future softforks,” she wrote. “The best candidate for this I have seen so far is P2MR (BIP 360) in conjunction with a new PQ signature opcode and cryptographic agility.”

SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce Admits: “We Were Wrong About Cryptocurrencies”

SEC member Hester Peirce, also known as “Crypto Mom,” discussed the agency’s past policies regarding crypto assets and the future of the sector in an interview.

Peirce stated that the approach taken during former chairman Gary Gensler’s tenure was “wrong in method, even if the intention was right,” and that this slowed down industry development.

Peirce argued that the SEC has not made sufficient efforts to understand the cryptocurrency world in past years. He stated that the regulator should engage in more dialogue with industry stakeholders before taking action, adding:

“I think we took the wrong approach in the past. While some intentions were good, the execution wasn’t right, and that’s why we wasted time. If we had established a framework from the very beginning, we could be in a much more productive place today.”

Peirce also addressed malicious activity in the crypto market, arguing that it’s important for a regulator to know its limits. He stated that not every issue falls within the SEC’s jurisdiction, saying, “Just because there’s a problem doesn’t necessarily mean it’s ‘my problem.’ Congress doesn’t want us to overstep our jurisdiction.”

Peirce, speaking specifically about “memecoins” and assets that are not considered securities, reminded investors to be cautious.

Peirce issued a clear warning that the SEC’s protective shield would not apply to losses in non-security assets: “I want people to be alert because our regulatory regime isn’t there to support them.”
