Crypto adoption in Denmark remains significantly lower than much of Europe, with new data showing that only 4% of the population currently holds digital assets—a figure unchanged since 2023.
A staff report from Danmarks Nationalbank highlights that the lack of growth is less about public interest and more about structural barriers within the financial system.
🔹 Adoption Far Below European Peers
While Denmark’s crypto ownership has remained flat, neighboring countries show much higher adoption rates:
Norway, Finland, and the United Kingdom: 10%+ ownership
Denmark: 4%, stagnant since 2023
The findings are based on a survey conducted between October and November 2025, covering over 3,000 respondents.
🔹 Banks and Tax Rules Kept Crypto at the Margins
For years, Danish banks largely restricted or discouraged access to crypto purchases, citing risk concerns. Combined with complex tax treatment of digital assets, this created a high-friction environment for retail investors.
As a result, crypto adoption in Denmark lagged behind broader European trends, even during global market cycles of strong growth.
🔹 Small Positions and Limited Exposure
Among Danish crypto holders, investment sizes tend to be modest:
Most holdings are below 10,000 DKK (~$1,570)
Total national crypto exposure is estimated between $317M and $847M
Indirect exposure via ETFs and crypto-linked stocks remains limited (~$211M)
This suggests crypto is still viewed primarily as a speculative side investment rather than a core portfolio allocation.
🔹 Usage Remains Investment-Focused
Crypto usage in Denmark is rarely transactional:
70–75% of holders keep assets on centralized platforms
Only 20–30% use self-custody wallets
Payments using crypto remain extremely uncommon

On one hand, exchange reserves across all exchanges have been in freefall, down to 2.683 million BTC at the latest reading. That’s one of the lowest reserve levels seen in recent months, down from close to 3 million BTC in late April-May 2025.

There are fewer coins on exchanges, so no one’s in a rush to sell.



At the same time, price has recovered from the early February dip. Supply is getting tighter.

But here’s where things get interesting. Spot retail activity, seen through the trading frequency surge, is the weakest it’s been in the last year. After peaking when Bitcoin traded at the ATH range, retail participation fell and hasn’t shown any muscle since.
