Charles Schwab is bringing Bitcoin to its 39 million clients – but without the protections they expect

Schwab is about to make buying Bitcoin feel like any other brokerage transaction, even though the protections behind it belong to a very different category of risk.
Charles Schwab announced this week that it will begin selling Bitcoin and Ethereum directly to its 39 million brokerage clients. They will appear in the same account view as stocks, ETFs, and retirement funds, in the same app, under the same brand, one click from the S&P 500 index fund a customer bought for their IRA.

What makes that arrangement so consequential is that the assets will arrive in one of the most familiar and trusted environments in American finance, while carrying a very different set of protections from what customers are used to seeing there.

Schwab's own disclosures say so plainly: the cryptocurrencies sold on its platform are not deposits, not FDIC-insured, not SIPC-protected, not backed by any central bank, and carry the risk of total loss of principal. That gap, between how crypto will feel to a Schwab customer and what it actually is, is the most consequential thing here. It is also the clearest illustration yet of the way crypto is entering mainstream American finance.

The product, called Schwab Crypto, will begin a phased launch in the coming weeks. At launch, it will support only two assets: Bitcoin and Ethereum, which together account for roughly three-quarters of the total crypto market cap.

While a big part of the crypto industry lamented the exclusion of altcoin heavyweights like Solana and XRP, the short list of supported coins is a smart and calculated decision. A company managing $12.2 trillion in client assets has every reason to avoid the headline risk that would come with a more speculative token imploding inside a retirement account.

30-Year Analyst Explains: “According to the Elliott Wave Theory, the Bitcoin Downturn Is Over”

Jordi Visser, a veteran macro investor with over 30 years of experience, assessed recent market developments. According to Visser, while artificial intelligence and commodity scarcity are ushering the world into a new economic era, Bitcoin is re-emerging with its “scarcity” argument.

Visser argues that investor psychology and central bank policies are changing in the digital age. Stating that the Fed has perfected its QE (quantitative easing) game plan, Visser said, “I don’t think we’ll see multi-year recessions or prolonged bear markets again in the rest of my life. The moment a crack appears in the system, it is intervened with money printing and interest rate cuts.”

He also added that in the hyper-connected world, investors experience “amnesia,” quickly forgetting negative events and focusing on new narratives.

According to the analyst, despite the deflationary pressure created by artificial intelligence (AI), a serious inflationary risk is looming in the short term. Visser argued that the AI world has reached its physical limits and is experiencing massive processor (CPU), memory (DRAM), and energy shortages.

Visser, particularly highlighting Elon Musk’s “Terra Fab” announcement, predicts that this bottleneck in the hardware and commodities sectors will keep inflation well above the Fed’s target of 2%, reaching 4% and higher.

Visser, who analyzed Bitcoin’s recent performance from a technical and macroeconomic perspective, stated that according to Elliott Wave theory, Bitcoin has completed its correction phase and entered a new uptrend from the $60,000 level.

Bitcoin supporters argue that BTC’s decentralized structure—lacking an issuer or central authority—makes it more resilient than stablecoins, which can be frozen or blacklisted by issuing entities under compliance rules.

However, questions remain about practicality. Galaxy Digital research head Alex Thorn estimated that transit fees per tanker could range between $200,000 and $2 million. While some reports suggest payments could be processed within seconds using the Lightning Network, experts note that large-scale, high-value transactions remain a technical limitation for the system today.
Thorn added that in a more realistic scenario, Iranian authorities would likely issue a Bitcoin QR code or wallet address to vessels after approval, rather than relying on fully automated instant settlement.
If implemented, even partially, such a system would represent a notable experiment in using cryptocurrency for real-world geopolitical trade flows. While still speculative, the discussion highlights Bitcoin’s growing narrative as a neutral settlement layer in global finance.

A major governance dispute has erupted inside the Neo ecosystem, where a significant portion of the project’s treasury—worth hundreds of millions of dollars—has reportedly been controlled through a highly centralized setup.
According to co-founder Da Hongfei, around 85% of the project’s assets were managed by fellow co-founder Erik Zhang using a single-signature wallet, without multisig protection or formal institutional safeguards. He described this structure as unusual for a project of this scale.
The crypto holdings in question, mainly in $NEO and $GAS tokens, are estimated to be worth between $200 million and $250 million—ironically exceeding Neo’s current market capitalization of around $197 million.
The disagreement between the two founders has now escalated into a public governance conflict. Both sides have exchanged accusations and proposed very different visions for the project’s future.
Da Hongfei has put forward a restructuring plan that includes moving the Neo Foundation from Singapore to the Cayman Islands, replacing founder-led control with an independent five-member board, and temporarily barring both founders from board participation for two years. His proposal also suggests redistributing a portion of tokens back to holders to improve decentralization.
In contrast, Erik Zhang’s counter-proposal argues for keeping the foundation in Singapore and maintaining current governance structures. He has also called for a formal investigation into past asset management, raising concerns about potential misuse or lack of transparency.
Da rejected these allegations, calling them “baseless and unfounded,” and tensions between the two founders have continued to escalate publicly since December.
