Tether moves over $70 million in bitcoin to reserve wallet: Arkham

The world’s largest stablecoin issuer received 951 BTC ($70.5 million) from a Bitfinex hot wallet to an address labeled as its bitcoin reserve, according to Arkham Intelligence data.

Tether is the second-largest bitcoin holder among private companies.

The bitcoin was worth $70.5 million at current prices.

Tether's bitcoin reserve now totals 97,141 BTC. The firm is the second-largest holder among private companies, behind Block One, according to Bitcoin Treasuries data. Strategy is the largest publicly-traded holder of BTC.

The move is consistent with Tether's pattern of accumulating bitcoin and moving the asset to its reserve wallet periodically. Last November, Tether moved 961 BTC (then worth $97 million) from Bitfinex to its bitcoin reserve. 

Tether began buying bitcoin in September 2022. Then, in May 2023, the company announced that it would allocate 15% of its net profits each quarter toward bitcoin purchases. Since then, the company has consistently increased its reserves as part of its long-term diversification strategy.

Last June, Tether withdrew 14,000 BTC from its bitcoin reserve wallet and moved it to an address labeled as belonging to Twenty One Capital.

Bitcoin was trading for $73,936 as of 1:02 p.m. ET on Wednesday, according to The Block Price Page.

About 4% of Tether's over $190 billion worth of reserves backing its USDT stablecoin are held in bitcoin, according to the company's website.

In response, our customers are accelerating their capacity expansion plans for 2026 and beyond," said CEO Christophe Fouquet in the company's quarterly results release. In its latest guidance for Q2, ASML raised its 2026 net sales forecast to a range of $42.46 billion to $47.18 billion. That's up from a range of $40.12 billion and $46.02 billion previously forecasted. Last week, a bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers proposed a bill that would cut off ASML's sales of DUV machines to Chinese chip companies, thereby affecting its already shrinking sales there. CoW Protocol prices continue to be under pressure over the last 24 hours as the project grappled with fallout from a security incident on April 14. Crypto dropped by nearly 3% to trade at approximately $0.213. Yet that drop was while the global crypto market was on the rise, even as Bitcoin modestly gained.

The divergence illustrates a palpable change in sentiment on the protocol in the wake of the hack. The downturn was set in motion by a front-end attack that attacked the platform’s website. In the last statement release, it was reported that an attacker gained control over the cow.fi domain via DNS hijacking.

This lets the attacker then take users down the path to a malicious interface that had a close match to the original site to redirect them to a similar site. The device had been set up to deceive users into agreeing to approve malicious transactions or revealing sensitive wallet information. Only days after the problem was exposed, the squad put out a public alert.

Users were told to avoid interacting with the platform’s front-end. However, the protocol was also paused as a precautionary measure. The team assured that both the core smart contracts and backend systems were not compromised. Still, the attack carried a significant risk since it attacked the interface that users use to interact with the protocol.

The incident was flagged early by Blockaid, a firm that monitors decentralized applications for suspicious activity. Its detection system identified unusual behavior linked to the cow.fi domain. Shortly after, the protocol confirmed the issue and urged users to stay away until further notice. This quick response helped limit wider damage, even though the event still affected market confidence.
