Bitcoin Records Its Most Impressive 2026 Surge, Tapping a Two‑Month Peak Above $72K

TL;DR:

Bitcoin surpassed $71,000 for the first time since June after breaking the six-week range that had kept it between $62,000 and $66,900.

The breakout forced the liquidation of $3 billion in short positions, the largest liquidation event since at least 2021.

Daily trading volume climbed 250% to $62 billion, while Coinbase’s Fear and Greed index jumped to 59 from 41.

The crypto market recorded one of its most explosive sessions of the year. Bitcoin broke the six-week sideways range that had contained it between $62,000 and $66,900 since July 8, and climbed above $71,000 for the first time since June. According to the latest data from CoinMarketCap, BTC is trading around $71,787 with an 11% gain over the past 24 hours and volume exceeding $62 billion.

The surge did not respond to a narrative catalyst but rather to market mechanics that had been building for weeks. Volatility had compressed to multi-year lows during that period, which encouraged traders to systematically bet on the downside every time the price approached the top of the range. That left a dense band of short liquidations between $65,000 and $67,000, ready to explode at any external catalyst.

Bitcoin Breaks the Ceiling: $3 Billion in Shorts

The trigger came from the bond market. The U.S. Treasury announced it would at least double its long-term debt buyback operations to $4 billion, which pulled the 30-year bond yield back from 5.337%, its highest level since 2007. The improvement in risk appetite was enough to break the top of the range and trigger the cascade. In less than an hour, $3 billion in short positions were forced to cover against thin supply, and Bitcoin climbed more than 8% in that span.

Hours later, comments from President Donald Trump generated a second push. His call on Congress to pass the Clarity Act, the suggestion that the United States could purchase significant amounts of Bitcoin, and the confirmation that regulators are working on an enabling pathway for Hyperliquid extended the rally above $70,000.

The Rest of the Market Follows BTC

The rest of the market followed Bitcoin. Ethereum rose nearly 19% to $2,280, just below its three-month high. SOL, XRP and DOGE posted gains of 12, 18 and 9% respectively. In derivatives, total open interest grew 9.11% to $131.25 billion, while BTC’s climbed 7.18% to $23.4 billion.

Funding rates remain contained — BTC at 0.0101% and ETH at 0.0103% — indicating that the typical leverage following a massive liquidation event has not yet arrived. Bitcoin’s dominance climbed to 59.2%, a signal that capital is concentrating in the highest-capitalization assets.
