Grayscale’s Head of Research, Zach Pandl, has drawn an analogy between Ethereum’s ETH issuance model and the economic framework of a small country, offering a fresh perspective on how the second-largest cryptocurrency operates.

Ethereum as a Digital Nation

In a recent analysis, Pandl explained that if Ethereum were a country, its only public service would be protecting property rights and maintaining a system for exchanging value. Unlike traditional governments that levy taxes to fund public services, Ethereum finances its operations by issuing new ETH, generating revenue through what economists call ‘seigniorage’—the profit made by issuing currency.

This comparison highlights a fundamental difference between Ethereum’s monetary policy and that of fiat-based economies. While central banks and governments use taxation and bond issuance to control money supply, Ethereum’s protocol automatically adjusts ETH issuance based on network activity and staking participation.

Staking as a Fiscal Mechanism

Pandl elaborated that stakers—participants who lock up ETH to secure the network—serve as the ‘property-rights protection service.’ In return for their contribution, they receive newly issued ETH. This mechanism effectively combines fiscal and monetary policy into a single, integrated system.

The analogy underscores the self-sustaining nature of Ethereum’s economy, where network security and currency issuance are directly linked. This design has implications for investors, as it influences ETH’s supply dynamics and long-term value proposition.

What Happened?
The BIP-110 faction broke from the main Bitcoin network and managed to grind out a microscopic four-block chain tip. That would normally kill a fork cold, but BIP-110 proponents have another escape route: ditch the minority chain’s crushing SHA-256 difficulty by replacing its PoW cryptographic hash function entirely. Word on the street is that the PoW switch could land in September.

As of today, Roughnecks had dragged the minority chain to block 961635, only for it to stall again after that block was mined three days ago on Aug. 12. Block 961636 has since accumulated a staggering pile of fees, but with virtually zero exchange support, nobody can put a credible price on the BIP-110 forked asset and how much those fees would be worth.

$XRP Ledger activity jumped to a two-month high on Aug. 14 as analytics firm Santiment recorded 49,929 active addresses in one 24-hour period, even while $XRP commentary reached a three-month bearish extreme. The increase came while $XRP traded below $1, creating a sharp divergence between network participation and retail sentiment.

Santiment stated:

“$XRP negativity surged throughout this week as prices have failed to rally (so far). Crowd commentary is now at a 3-month bearish extreme across X, Reddit, Telegram, and other crypto channels.”

The latest spike extends an increase already visible earlier in August, when daily active addresses averaged about 35,700 through Aug. 12, compared with roughly 26,400 during July. Active $XRP addresses rose nearly 35% while new addresses averaged about 2,260 per day, almost unchanged from July’s 2,270, indicating greater use among existing addresses rather than clear evidence of rapid user growth.

Santiment shared:

“The $XRP Ledger, on the other hand, is not so quiet. $XRP just saw 49,929 active addresses in a single 24 hour span, its highest activity level in over 2 months, after earlier July activity had dropped near 2026 lows.”
