Crypto-backed loans are becoming a practical financing option for investors who want liquidity while maintaining exposure to digital assets. Instead of selling Bitcoin to cover a major expense, borrowers can use their holdings as collateral and receive cash while retaining ownership.

The basic structure is straightforward. A lender accepts Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Solana as collateral and advances a portion of its market value. The loan-to-value ratio, or LTV, determines how much can be borrowed. A lower LTV generally provides a larger safety cushion if the crypto market falls.

For example, Figure currently advertises crypto-backed loans with an initial LTV of up to 75%, while its published rates vary according to the collateral and LTV selected. Its standard product has a 12-month term, and the company says eligible borrowers can receive funding without relying on a traditional credit score. 

There can also be a tax advantage, depending on the borrower’s jurisdiction. In the United States, the IRS states that borrowed money generally is not included in gross income because the borrower has an obligation to repay it. That differs from selling appreciated crypto, which can create a taxable gain. Tax treatment varies by individual circumstances and jurisdiction, so professional advice remains important.

Swell shared the latest additions on X on Aug. 13 as financial institutions increase their involvement in blockchain payments, stablecoins, tokenization, and digital asset infrastructure.

The updated Swell 2026 speaker lineup includes Robinhood Senior Vice President and General Manager of Crypto Johann Kerbrat, BNY Global Head of Markets Laide Majiyagbe, and Intercontinental Exchange Vice President of Strategic Initiatives Michael Blaugrund. Featured participants also include Water.org co-founder Matt Damon, Bullish Chairman and CEO Tom Farley, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, and Ripple President Monica Long.
