Coinbase’s Q2 miss – Why Bernstein still sees 85% upside for COIN
Coinbase-backed Stand With Crypto has endorsed 32 more pro-crypto candidates ahead of November elections.Coinbase Global Inc. (NASDAQ: COIN) slipped 3.76% on Monday and closed below $180. The move erased part of last week’s 30% gains after Bitcoin’s explosive rebound to $80K. 

However, the Coinbase COIN stock price pullback was part of a broader cool-off across the equity market. The risk-off move happened ahead of the Fed’s preferred inflation metric (PCE Price Index) scheduled for Wednesday, the 26th of August. Additionally, Nvidia’s Q2 earnings report is scheduled for Wednesday, with Friday’s Fed chair Warsh speech at Jackson Hole expected to close this week’s macro calendar. Collectively, it will be a volatile week for both crypto and equity markets.

Bitcoin, in particular, may retreat or reclaim $82K to reinforce the start of the early innings of the next bull market cycle. Whatever the direction, it will influence crypto stocks such as COIN. 

Bernstein maintains $330 price target for COIN stock
That said, Bernstein analysts are still maintaining the $330 price target for COIN. At the current price level near $180, that’s 85% upside potential.

According to the analysts, led by Gautam Chhugani, Wall Street was underestimating the exchange and its potential. The exchange missed revenue targets in the Q2 earnings report.

However, Bernstein argued that the exchange’s stablecoins, derivatives, prediction markets, and subscription revenue will increasingly become large parts of the firm. According to them, Coinbase’s quarterly results were only telling one part of the story. 

Overall, 18 Wall Street analysts have issued a buy rating for the stock, with a consensus price target of $215. That implies a 20% short-term upside potential.

Low participation in the derivatives market has a silver lining – it tends to make price moves steadier and gains more sustainable.

That positive impact is more pronounced when the slowdown in activity is characterized by a slide in open interest in futures collateralized by $BTC or another cryptocurrency. That’s precisely the case right now.

According to Glassnode, crypto-margined open interest has fallen to an all-time low of roughly 52,000 $BTC and now accounts for just 11% of the total market activity.

This makes the market structurally less volatile because the value of cash collateral does not fall alongside bitcoin during a sell-off. By contrast, crypto-backed collateral can create a feedback loop in which falling prices reduce collateral values, trigger liquidations and intensify the decline. The shift towards cash-margined futures helps explain both bitcoin’s dwindling volatility in recent years.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) issued a determination allowing it to sanction any person, regardless of location, it determines operates in Iran’s cryptocurrency sector.

Iran’s crypto ecosystem reached $7.78 billion in 2025, according to Chainalysis data. IRGC-linked wallets received more than $3 billion during the year and accounted for over half of Iranian crypto inflows in the fourth quarter, though the estimates cover only wallets publicly tied to sanctions listings.

Crypto was one of five sectors named under Operation Economic Outcast, which Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described as an economic “D–Day.” Technology, gold, aviation and shipping were the other included sectors.

The change does not automatically blacklist every Iranian crypto company or prohibit all activity involving the country’s digital asset industry. Instead, it gives OFAC a standing basis for future designations, widening a campaign that had previously focused on named exchanges, wallets and individuals.

Alongside nearly 60 entities, the Treasury sanctioned UAE-based Ukrainian vessel broker Ivan Obukhov, alleging he processed more than $100 million in crypto payments since 2023 to facilitate Iranian oil sales on behalf of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force.

Bitcoin rose above $80,000 in Asian morning hours Tuesday, up 4% on the day and over 25% on the week, extending a rally that began with the Treasury's move to expand its bond buybacks.

Positioning is getting stretched, meanwhile. Bitfire Research pointed to a widely watched momentum gauge which compared recent gains against recent losses on a scale of zero to 100, sitting near 78 for bitcoin.

Anything above 70 is usually read as a sign that a price has climbed too far too fast and is due a pause. Bitfire signals selling pressure between $78,500 and $82,000, and buyers likely to step in around $72,400 to $73,500, per a note sent to CoinDesk.

Solana led the majors, up almost 8% to just above $101 and almost 35% over seven days. Ether added over 2% to just under $2,500 and is up almost 32% on the week. BNB rose over 2% to just under $714. XRP gained almost 2% to just above $1.50 and leads all majors on the week at over 52%.

Solana's gains come as validators vote on two proposals that would cut SOL's supply, as CoinDesk reported, one slowing new issuance and one raising daily burns to as much as $800,000. Voting closes Thursday.

Zcash extended its run, up over 1% to $846 and 66% on the week, the strongest weekly performance among the top dozen tokens. Dogecoin edged up to 9 cents for a 32% weekly gain, and tron rose half a percent to just under 35 cents, the only major without a double-digit week at 4%.

Hyperliquid's HYPE was the sole decliner, off marginally at $81, though it holds a 36% weekly gain.
