Malta Regulator Proposes New DAO Category in DeFi Rulebook

Malta's financial regulator has published a discussion paper exploring how decentralized autonomous organizations could be classified under a new regulatory category within its approach to decentralized finance oversight.

The Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) released the discussion paper on DeFi in June 2026, examining how parts of the decentralized finance ecosystem might fit within existing and future regulatory frameworks.

How Malta wants to treat DAOs differently

A DAO, or decentralized autonomous organization, is a governance structure where decisions are made collectively by token holders through smart contracts rather than by a traditional board of directors. Most jurisdictions have no specific legal classification for DAOs, leaving them in a regulatory gray area.

Capital that spent years flowing into crypto is chasing Al stocks instead. And the question being asked across every corner of the market right now is the same one it always is at moments like this: is it ever going to end?

Where Did All the Money Go

For anyone confused about why Bitcoin has been bleeding while the stock market printed record highs, Michael Saylor laid it out in a recent interview. The Al industry is currently trying to raise approximately $500 billion to power data centres, and that capital has to come from somewhere. A portion of it, he said, is coming directly from Bitcoin.

"They're creating a suction and they're sucking capital out of every other asset class," Saylor said. "One or two percent of that capital is coming from Bitcoin."

His view is that this rotation is temporary by nature. Once the Al deals close and lockup periods expire, the traders and hedge funds who got in early will rotate profits back into other assets including Bitcoin. He estimates a 12 to 24 week cycle before that reversal becomes visible, pointing to the end of 2026 as the window where things start to shift.

Ric Edelman predicts CLARITY Act may unlock crypto floodgatesRic Edelman has predicted that up to 95% of institutions without crypto exposure could enter the market if the CLARITY Act becomes law.

In a recent interview, Edelman said the disconnect between crypto prices and industry activity has become increasingly noticeable as large financial firms continue expanding their blockchain and tokenization efforts.

While cryptocurrency markets have struggled to maintain momentum amid regulatory uncertainty, Edelman said major Wall Street institutions, including BlackRock, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Franklin Templeton, State Street, Invesco, and Fidelity, continue building products and services tied to digital assets.

"Crypto prices are not reflecting what's happening in the world of crypto," Edelman said, pointing to rising institutional engagement even as investors remain cautious.

Crypto Market Sinks Deeper

Bitcoin dropped below $62,000 amid heavy selling, while Ethereum bulls failed to defend the support at $1,700. XRP and Dogecoin recorded sharp declines as well.

Over $560 million was liquidated from the cryptocurrency market in the last 24 hours, with $490 million in bullish long positions wiped out, according to Coinglass data.

Roughly $350 million in Bitcoin longs were at risk of liquidation if the price dropped to $60,000.

Bitcoin’s open interest fell 1.39% over the last 24 hours. Whale and retail derivatives traders, meanwhile, bought the dip, adding more long exposure to $BTC.

The global cryptocurrency market capitalization stood at $2.15 trillion, following a decline of 1.63% from the previous day.

Stocks In Red After Chip Stocks Tumble

Stocks faced heavy sell-offs on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 45.87 points, or 0.09%, to close at 51,666.84.The S&P 500 slid 1.44% to end at 7,365.46,while the tech-focused Nasdaq Composite declined 2.21% to close at 25,587.04.

Why This Support Is Significant For $BTC

Ali Martinez, a widely followed cryptocurrency analyst and trader, said that Bitcoin must hold the support at $60,587 to “maintain the current trend.”

Citing on-chain data, the analyst highlighted the $60,000–$63,000 range as one of the largest volume clusters, where over one million $BTC changed hands.
Michaël van de Poppe, another well-known cryptocurrency commentator, stated that Ethereum is currently stuck in the middle and needs to break above $1,800 to “regain momentum.”

“If the markets break back into that range, it can move quickly to $2,500+,” Van De Poppe sa

Analysts at the crypto exchange Bitfinex revealed in the latest Bitfinex Alpha report that the current crypto market environment is being reshaped by shifting Federal Reserve expectations and inflation risks. These factors have created near-term pressure for risk assets like gold and $BTC; regardless, the floor of the latter has remained intact.

Bitcoin in Limbo

On-chain data shows that neither bulls nor bears are firmly in control. With $BTC trading within the $62,500–$72,000 consolidation zone, the market appears to be in limbo, rather than a sustained bearish phase.

Bitfinex analysts outlined two bullish tests for a potential sustained uptrend on lower timeframes, but they all failed. The tests were a sustained spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) market bid and a calming of the derivatives complex, with funding moving from neutral to negative.

In the face of the failure, there are now two opposing forces pulling at market sentiment on inflation: the potential of softening energy risks following a peace deal between the U.S. and Iran and the Fed’s focus on inflationary heat rather than the immediate relief in crude prices.

For $BTC to continue holding its floor, the Fed needs to be willing to “hold its nerve,” according to experts. It remains to be seen how the market will move until this happens

Analysts further explained that ETFs are currently the primary proof of the market’s indecisiveness. These products have failed to establish a bullish trend and have instead reverted to net redemptions. After losing support at $0.199, Humanity Protocol slipped below several key Exponential Moving Averages. Those levels now act as resistance rather than support.

From a technical perspective, that shift matters.
