Bitcoin slips toward $63,000 as a tech selloff drags risk assets lower

Bitcoin fell toward $63,000 on Tuesday, caught in a broad retreat from risk as investors pulled out of the technology stocks that have led markets all year.

The token traded around $63,640, down 0.9% over 24 hours and 3.3% on the week, per CoinDesk data, after touching about $65,076 on Monday and sliding through the session. The selling was marketwide. Ether fell 0.9% to $1,719 and is also down 3.3% on the week, XRP dropped 1.6% to $1.12 for a 9% weekly loss, solana lost 3.4% to $71 and dogecoin slid 6.6% over seven days.

Tron was the rare gainer, up 1.3% on the day and 4.6% on the week. Hyperliquid's HYPE fell 4.8% on the week.

The pressure came from outside crypto. A rotation out of this year's best-performing technology and chip shares sank global equities, with a gauge of Asian stocks falling more than 2% after a record close and South Korea's Kospi plunging more than 6% on fears that the rally in chipmakers had run too far.

S&P 500 futures fell 0.8% and Nasdaq 100 contracts dropped 1.3%, following a slide in megacap tech and rising bond yields that pulled US stocks lower on Monday. Brent crude edged below $78 a barrel and gold retreated.

That marks a shift in what is steering crypto. For weeks bitcoin moved on each twist of the Iran story. Now, with a peace roadmap in place and oil sliding, the dominant force is the same AI-driven tech trade that has carried equities to records, and crypto is falling as that trade wobbles.

The next test is memory chipmaker Micron's results on Wednesday, a read on whether AI spending can keep sustaining the rally that has lifted its shares more than 300% this year.

Ethereum Validators May Redirect Up to 10% of Staking Rewards, If the Validator Approves

Ethereum validators could soon play a direct role in funding ecosystem development under a new proposal that would allow up to 10% of staking rewards to be redirected toward public goods, infrastructure, and research projects.

The idea aims to solve Ethereum's funding challenge as concerns grow over the future financing of Ethereum's core development efforts.

What the Proposal Wants to Change The proposal, titled Validator Redirected Revenue, was introduced by Ethereum researcher Clement Lesaege and contributors as a potential protocol-level funding mechanism.

It says that Ethereum suffers from a "free-rider problem," where everyone benefits from ecosystem improvements, but few are willing to fund them.

Under the proposal, validators would vote on how much of their staking rewards should be redirected to ecosystem funding. If more than 51% of validators support a non-zero contribution, the selected rate would become mandatory for all validators. The maximum redirect rate would be capped at 10%, while validators could also vote to keep it at zero.

The proposal states that, "If 51% of validators signal a redirect rate above 0, the contribution becomes mandatory for all validators.

Bitcoin's futures market has undergone a sharp leverage reset. Traders are now watching whether the next move will be driven by spot demand rather than derivatives speculation. Data shared by Cryptoquant on June 22 showed total $BTC Open Interest across exchanges falling from $26.0 billion to $20.89 billion during June.

The drop in futures exposure outpaced the decline in price. Bitcoin fell from roughly $71,200 at the start of the month to $63,234 by June 21, down 11.4%, while Open Interest contracted 19.5%, indicating futures exposure was reduced more aggressively than the decline in $BTC price.

Referring to the decline in futures positioning and the reduction in leveraged exposure across the market, the analyst stated:

"So far, the data shows that excess leverage has been reduced."

Traders often track the relationship between price and Open Interest to assess market structure. During the first week of June, $BTC fell to a local low of $60,900 on June 6 while Open Interest dropped from $26.0 billion to about $22.4 billion, a pattern consistent with liquidations and position reductions rather than a buildup of new leveraged positions.

That's the conclusion from an indicator that might seem to signal a bearish shift in sentiment but has tended to presage a more bullish outlook.

The indicator is based on two moving averages: Bitcoin’s 50-week simple moving average (SMA) and the 100-week average. The declines seen in US stocks yesterday were first reflected in Asian markets this morning. Chip manufacturers, in particular, experienced sharp sell-offs, and these declines caused Bitcoin to fall to $62,000 and gold to drop to $4,100 per ounce.

While Bitcoin remains above the $62,000 level, analysis firm QCP Capital predicts that BTC and the cryptocurrency market will continue to move within a certain range.

QCP Capital analysts stated that Bitcoin’s recent rise above $65,000 was due to Strategy’s additional Bitcoin purchases. Yesterday, Strategy bought another 520 Bitcoin, increasing its cash reserves by $300 million to $1.4 billion.
