Bitcoin should prepare now, even if quantum is a 'lab experiment’: Adam Back

Blockstream CEO Adam Back, an early pioneer of the crypto movement, said Bitcoiners should be looking at building quantum-resistant solutions now, even if the threat is still decades away.

“Quantum computing still has a lot to prove. Current systems are essentially lab experiments. I’ve followed the field for over 25 years, and progress has been incremental,” Back said at Paris Blockchain Week on Tuesday.

“That said, Bitcoin should prepare,” Back said, adding that the “safest approach” is to build optional upgrades that allow migration to quantum-resistant cryptography if needed.

Concerns that quantum computers could eventually break blockchain cryptography have fueled industry-wide fear that bad actors could use it to break into crypto wallets, plunging the market into chaos.

Back said in November that the quantum threat is still 20 to 40 years away, while explaining to Bloomberg earlier this month that today’s quantum computers are slower than calculators.

Despite this, his Bitcoin development company, Blockstream, has a dedicated quantum team researching potential threat vectors to the Bitcoin network.

Part of that work has involved implementing hash-based signatures on Blockstream’s Bitcoin layer-2 Liquid Network, Back said at Paris Blockchain Week.

“Preparation is key. Making changes in a controlled way is far safer than reacting in a crisis.”

He added that the Taproot protocol could also support alternative signature schemes on the Bitcoin network without affecting current users.

China already has the compute to train its own Mythos-like AI: Nvidia CEO

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has warned that China already has the computing power and data center capacity necessary to train an AI model at the same level as Anthropic’s AI model Claude Mythos, which could threaten global cybersecurity.

Huang was asked in an interview on the Dwarkesh Patel podcast on Wednesday whether the Chinese government’s access to chips to train a model like Claude Mythos — which has cyberoffensive capabilities — could be a threat to US national security.

Mythos was trained on a “fairly mundane capacity,” Huang said.

“The amount of capacity and the type of compute it was trained on is abundantly available in China, so you just have to first realize that chips exist in China.”

Anthropic limited access to its new AI model in April after it identified thousands of software vulnerabilities across major operating systems and browsers, raising concerns about potential misuse in cyberattacks. A Chinese-made AI model with the same capability could wreak havoc if misused.

Huang said that the amount of compute China has is “enormous.”

“They have datacenters that are sitting completely empty, fully powered. You know, they have ghost cities, they have ghost datacenters too. They have so much infrastructure capacity. If they wanted to, they [could] just gang up more chips.”

A Nominee With Stakes In The Industry
Against that backdrop, Kevin Warsh — US President Donald Trump’s pick to replace Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell — filed a financial disclosure last week that revealed personal investments in crypto and artificial intelligence companies.

Based on reports, Warsh’s filing with the US Office of Government Ethics lists holdings in Compound, Dapper Labs, and Kinetic on the crypto side, alongside AI firms including Delphi, Conversion, Factory, and Glue, among others.

His total disclosed assets top $100 million. The largest single entry is more than $50 million in something called the Juggernaut Fund. Another major line item: more than $10 million in consulting fees from the Duquesne Family Office, the investment firm run by billionaire Stanley Druckenmiller.

None of his crypto and AI investments included a value range in the disclosure. It is unclear why. The ethics office’s rules do not require reporting assets valued under $1,000, which may explain the omission — though the gap leaves open questions about the full scope of his exposure to sectors the Fed’s interest rate decisions directly affect.

A group of Bitcoin developers, including Jameson Lopp and five other contributors, has proposed a controversial new security framework aimed at protecting Bitcoin from potential future quantum computing threats.
The idea focuses on gradually phasing out and eventually freezing older Bitcoin addresses that could become vulnerable if quantum computers reach sufficient power to break current cryptographic standards.
Multi-Phase Migration Plan
The proposal, outlined in Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP-361) on GitHub, builds on earlier work from BIP-360 and introduces a new output type called Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR). This structure is designed to reduce exposure of public keys, which are currently one of the main theoretical attack surfaces for quantum computing.
The plan is divided into several stages:
Phase 1: Restrict legacy addresses
Users would be prevented from sending BTC to quantum-vulnerable address types, encouraging migration toward upgraded wallet formats.
Phase 2: Enforce full transition (two years later)
Any wallets still using outdated signature schemes would lose the ability to send Bitcoin entirely, effectively forcing full ecosystem migration. Funds left in legacy formats could become unusable if not upgraded in time.
Phase 3: Possible recovery mechanism (under discussion)
Developers are also considering a potential recovery pathway for users who fail to migrate in time, although this remains highly experimental and has not reached consensus.
Community Debate
The proposal is driven by long-term concerns that advances in quantum computing could eventually undermine Bitcoin’s current cryptographic security model. Supporters argue that proactive upgrades are necessary to protect the network before such threats become practical.

Market data confirms price appreciation followed a larger climb across crypto, with total market growth staying near Bitcoin’s rate.

Bitcoin Briefly Surges to $75K Before Easing

The latest moves came after a firmer run earlier in the week.

Bitcoin had moved above 1% or more over that period and reclaimed some of the key technical levels. But the rise over $75,000 was significant because it coincided with widely watched moving averages. These levels are frequently used to inform short-term trading decisions. Even though the price pulled back slightly, the structure remains stable for now.

Institutional demand has played a central role in the latest rally. Data shows that U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded net inflows of about $411.5 million on April 15. This marked one of the largest daily inflows for the month. A major share of this came from BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, which alone added roughly $214 million. These inflows indicate steady interest from large investors and provide direct support to prices.

At the same time, overall market conditions have also contributed to the move. Traditional financial markets have shown signs of stability. The S&P 500 has moved higher, and Bitcoin continues to show a strong correlation with it. Current data places this correlation at around 86%. This indicates that macro factors such as liquidity and risk appetite are influencing crypto prices.

The firm made that donation in February to the Fellowship PAC, according to a Federal Election Commission filing. Bloomberg earlier reported the news. Lutnick's sons now run Cantor Fitzgerald.

Cantor Fitzgerald and Tether, the world's largest stablecoin issuer, have maintained close ties since 2021, when the firm began serving as a custodian for Tether’s reserves. During Lutnick's Senate confirmation hearing last year, lawmakers pressed the secretary on those ties as well as his influence over the crypto industry as a whole.
