Bitcoin network activity is approaching record levels once again, but this time the surge is being driven by a dramatic increase in microtransactions rather than major price movements.

According to recent blockchain data, transactions involving less than 0.01 BTC now account for approximately 80% of all daily Bitcoin transactions. This marks a significant increase compared to previous years and has pushed overall network activity close to its historical peak despite Bitcoin's relatively subdued market performance.

The growth is largely attributed to Bitcoin-based data protocols such as Ordinals, Runes and BRC-20 tokens. These systems allow users to store digital content, create tokenized assets and record data directly on the Bitcoin blockchain. As adoption expands, the number of small-value transactions continues to rise rapidly.

CryptoQuant's Bitcoin Network Activity Index recently turned positive for the first time since 2024, signaling renewed usage growth across the ecosystem. Network activity is now reported to be only around 7% below the all-time high reached in September 2024.

A major contributor to this trend is the increased use of OP_RETURN, a Bitcoin feature that allows information to be embedded directly into blockchain transactions. Usage of OP_RETURN has reached near-record levels, reflecting growing demand for data-related applications built on Bitcoin.

However, the surge has also sparked debate within the community. Critics argue that non-financial transactions consume valuable block space and may increase transaction fees for users conducting traditional Bitcoin transfers. Supporters counter that expanding utility strengthens Bitcoin's long-term relevance and encourages broader adoption.

Franklin proposes ETF that reinvests stock dividends into Bitcoin exposure

Franklin Templeton has filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to launch a new exchange-traded fund that would convert stock dividends into Bitcoin exposure. This offers investors a hybrid strategy that combines large-cap U.S. equities with systematic BTC accumulation.

The proposed product, called the Franklin US Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF, seeks to track the VettaFi US Large-Cap 500 Bitcoin DRIP Index, according to a June 18 filing.

Unlike spot Bitcoin ETFs, which provide direct exposure to Bitcoin’s price, the proposed fund would primarily hold large-cap U.S. stocks while using dividends generated by those holdings to increase its Bitcoin allocation over time.
