The latest session pushed cumulative inflows during the five-day run to roughly $1.69 billion. Cryptoquant, an on-chain and market data analytics firm, shared analysis on X on May 7, outlining the price levels bitcoin may need to reclaim before traders can confirm a market bottom. $BTC traded near $80,874 while remaining below several realized price bands tied to underwater holder groups. The analysis focused on how those resistance levels could determine whether recent recovery attempts develop into a sustained reversal.

The chart in the analysis mapped Bitcoin UTXO age bands against realized price levels for different holder cohorts. It identified the 3-month to 6-month realized price near $88,879 as the first line of overhead supply above spot price. Another resistance wall appeared near $93,446 for the 12-month to 18-month cohort. The heaviest concentration came from the 6-month to 12-month band near $111,851, which remained roughly 29% above $BTC spot price at the time of the study. The analysis stated:

“Every one of these levels is a break-even exit point for a different wave of trapped buyers.”

UTXO age bands track bitcoin supply based on how long coins have remained unmoved since their last transaction. The chart separated holder groups into time-based cohorts, allowing the study to identify where different groups of underwater investors may begin

Bitcoin slips to $79,000, DOGE leads majors losses as negative funding rates set 10-year record

The longer the funding rates stay red, the louder the short squeeze gets.

Bitcoin traded at $79,614 in Asian hours Friday, down 1.6% over 24 hours but still up 3.3% on the week, after pulling back from a Wednesday high of $81,500 that was the highest print since late January.

Ether dropped 2% to $2,278, dogecoin slid 3.8% to $0.1063, XRP fell 1.7% to $1.38, and BNB shed 0.7% to $638. Solana and TRON held in green territory at $88.14 and $0.3474 respectively. Dogecoin is the only major coin in the red on the seven-day tape.

The pullback came as U.S. forces fired on Iranian targets after attacks on American naval destroyers transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, per reports.

President Donald Trump described the strike as a "love tap" in an ABC News interview, said the ceasefire with Iran remains "in effect," and threatened to hit harder if Tehran does not sign a deal soon. Brent crude climbed 1.2% to around $101 a barrel on the escalation, though oil is still down more than 6% on the week as the broader US-Iran de-escalation narrative continues to hold.

Equities took a similar pause. The MSCI All Country World Index slipped 0.3% and Asian shares fell 1.2% from a record close, though the region is still on track for a fifth straight week of gains. Wall Street futures were 0.2% higher in early trading, suggesting the pullback is profit-taking rather than a structural reversal.

Bitcoin futures funding rates have now stayed negative for 67 consecutive days, the longest stretch in 10 years per K33 Research. Funding rates are periodic payments between traders holding long and short futures positions, with negative funding meaning shorts are paying longs to keep their positions open.

Crypto risk management and infrastructure provider Chaos Labs said its Chaos Oracle Network, which provides data feeds to blockchain applications, was not compromised after a hacking attempt over the weekend by a potential “nation-state.”

Chaos Labs founder Omer Goldberg said in an X post Thursday that the company identified an attack over the weekend, possibly by a “nation state,” and immediately moved to a full lockdown.

“The surface area was strictly contained to operational wallets we use for routine onchain operations. At no point was the Chaos Oracle Network breached or compromised.”

“Chaos Oracles run in a fully isolated environment with nodes distributed globally, protected by layered security and cryptographic controls,” Goldberg said.

“The authorities and cyber professionals working with us have characterized the activity as consistent with nation-state attacks, he said. “The investigation continues, and we will share more as it allows.”

State-backed hacker groups, particularly those from North Korea, have been seen as a persistent threat to the crypto space.

North Korea-affiliated actors have been accused of stealing at least $578 million across several major incidents in April and have been linked to many of the industry's largest hacks. North Korea recently rejected claims linking it to global cybercrime, calling the allegations unfounded.

Goldberg said that Chaos Labs has rotated all keys since the attempted attack and said there hasn’t been any further suspicious activity.The April Kelp DAO hack has been one of the year's largest security incidents, causing broader ecosystem contagion and impacting the interconnected crypto lending market.

Drift Protocol, a decentralized cryptocurrency exchange, and at least a dozen other crypto entities were hacked in the same month.

Coinbase shares slid Thursday after the US crypto exchange reported a steep first-quarter loss while revenue missed Wall Street expectations.

Coinbase reported a net loss of $394.1 million in Q1, its second consecutive quarterly loss after reporting a $667 million loss in Q4 2025. It swung from a $65.6 million profit a year earlier.

“Macro conditions were genuinely tough,” Coinbase chief financial officer Alesia Haas told investors on an earnings call. “Total crypto market cap and total crypto trading volume were both down more than 20% quarter-over-quarter.”

Coinbase’s earnings come as other crypto companies have also struggled to turn a profit in the first months of 2026 as a crypto market slump pushed some traders to other investments.
